SUGGESTED ITINERARY

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

Day 1

On arrival to Ivalo Airport, a short shuttle transfer will take you to Muotka Wilderness Hotel. Check in to your cosy room or log cabin and prepare for a winter adventure like no other. Admire the pristine surroundings overlooking the frozen river Kakslauttanen surrounded by forests and woodland. After dark, look out for any signs of the magical Northern Lights.

Day 2

Start your day in the best way, with a tasty Lappish breakfast, before stepping out into the winter wilds for your first adventure. After a short introduction, hop on board a snowmobile and drive with your guide to a reindeer farm. Here you will meet the reindeer herder, learn about their lives and customs, how to catch a reindeer with a 'lasso' and spend time feeding them their favourite snack. Finish off your visit with a short sleigh ride through the forests. Savour a delightful soup lunch during the day.

Day 3

Embrace a slower pace today with a guided snowshoe walk through the surrounding countryside, draped in its white winter coat. With only the crunch of snow underfoot, you can embrace the peaceful silence that is all around you. Throughout the trek, your guide will enlighten you with stories and information on the animals and nature that call these lands their home, even during the colder months.

This evening take your seat in a comfortable sled, pulled by a snowmobile, and head off into the night in search of the mesmerising northern lights. Your destination is an Aurora camp, well away from any artificial light pollution, with an open fire, plenty of hot drinks and the perfect viewing spot to enjoy the multitude of colours as they flame across the sky.

Day 4

It is always nice to make new friends on holiday, how about several dozen huskies! If there is one experience that brings you to the heart of the North it is the thrill of dog-sledding. As you tether your team of dogs to the sled, their excitement is highly contagious. Two people share a sled and take turns to drive. As you follow woodland trails and cross frozen lakes, the dogs fall silent and you are left with the soft padding of paws and the swoosh of the sled on the snow for company. There really is no better way to explore.

Day 5

With plenty of snow, an abundance of different trails to explore and beautiful scenery around every corner, today’s snowmobiling safari across the Lapland fells will be an unforgettable experience. You'll share a snowmobile with a fellow traveller and take it in turns to drive. During the day you will stop for lunch and hot drinks to warm you through.

Day 6

Slowing the pace once more, time to try out the traditional Finnish sport of cross country skiing. You’ll be shown the best techniques and spend time getting to know the skis. There are plenty of tracks surrounding Muotka, many of them illuminated, so you will have the chance to explore and practice your new-found skills after your introductory outing.

When darkness descends, it's time to head out once more to search the Aurora Borealis, this time by snowmobile. You'll drive in pairs towards open ground to try to spot signs of the Northern Lights in the night sky.

Day 7

After breakfast, it is time to say goodbye to new friends and transfer back to the airport for your onward journey. If you wish to extend your Lapland adventure let one of our team create your perfect vacation.
