WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

Day 1:

There are regular trains from Stockholm, Oslo and Gothenburg direct to Karlstad, the capital of Varmland and taking approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours. On arrival at Karlstad you will be met and transferred to Fyrbo Guesthouse, situated next to Lake Grasmangen. The transfer takes 45 minutes and you will have an opportunity to stop off at a local supermarket to purchase snacks and drinks for your stay, subject to opening hours.

You will receive a warm welcome by your hosts, Richard and Julia, and will have time to settle into your accommodation. The comfortable apartments at the guesthouse vary in size depending on the number of occupants, but they all include a private bathroom, kitchenette and sitting area to relax after a day’s exertions.

All meals are included, starting with a wholesome home-cooked dinner on the first night to breakfast on departure day, with large tents with dining areas and outdoor tables to enjoy eating al fresco. During the day pack lunches are included if you’re out on daytime excursions.

A big feature of this adventure stay is the social element, with guests all coming together at meal times to share stories of the day’s exploits and enjoy being outdoors under the long daylight hours.

Day 2:

Today is the start of the active pursuits - don your walking boots and with the aid a GPS with coordinates along the way, set off on a 10km hike through forests, across wetlands and up hills, enjoying the great outdoors.

Once back at the Guesthouse, time to relax before the evening meal.

Day 3:

After breakfast, get ready for time on the water. You have a choice of using a raft with a small electric motor or canoes, making your way across Lake Grasmangen (approximately 7km), leisurely paddling and enjoying the scenery on the way to an island at the end of the lake. On the island you’ll find tipi tents, along with sleeping equipment and the necessary essentials to see you through the night. A guide will deliver food items for you to cook your evening meal on the open fire. Enjoy time in the peaceful wilderness, spotting wildlife, going for a swim and sitting by the open fire.

Day 4:

After waking up to the sound of birds, prepare a leisurely breakfast before packing up your gear and getting back on the raft or canoes for a trip across the lake, heading to Fyrbo Guesthouse. There is plenty of time to slowly make your way across the lake, perhaps stopping off for a swim in the fresh waters, or having a picnic lunch.

The afternoon is free for you to enjoy the grounds around the guesthouse, take a stroll in the surroundings or go fishing in the lake.

Day 5:

Following three active days, today you may prefer to relax at the guesthouse by the lake. You can sit back and enjoy the natural surroundings, perhaps go for a swim or a short walk to stretch your legs. If you fancy something a little more active, then try the stand-up paddleboards or jump on the mountain bikes and go for a cycle on the trails nearby. You can do as much or as little as you like!

Day 6:

After breakfast, get ready for a day on the mountain bikes around the local lakes of Lersjon and Orten. Depending on your preference, there are two routes to choose from - 20 or 35 km long. Head out on the roads and trails, through forest landscapes and past idyllic lakes, stopping on route to rest and have lunch before making your way back to the guesthouse in time for a well deserved meal.

Day 7:

Your last active day in Sweden’s wilderness is spent trekking through the beautiful forests around Lake Grasmangen. Get ready to hit the trails and explore the area!

Once back at the guesthouse, take one last time to appreciate the calmness and beauty of this natural setting by the lake, and enjoy your last evening meal by the outdoor fire.

Day 8:

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Karlstad Station for the train journey back to Stockholm, Oslo or Gothenburg for your onward flight. Or you may wish to extend your stay with a few nights in the city.
