Dawson City Gold Rush Short Break

Experience the authentic Gold Rush town of Dawson City on a culturally rich short break. The infamous gold rush of the Yukon saw thousands of people from around the globe make the arduous journey to the remote outpost of Dawson. Learn about how the town exploded from a few hundred to several thousand people in a few short years, get to know colourful locals from the past and present alike, pan for Klondike gold and witness spectacular views across Tombstone Provincial Park. This colourful short break is the perfect trip for history buffs and adventure seekers alike.

Day 1:

Your Klondike adventure begins from Whitehorse today travelling along the Klondike Highway to Dawson City. Sit back and relax during the journey where you will experience the truly vast landscapes of the Yukon. With very few settlements between the journey today will travel through remote areas of wilderness and unusually named settlements and sights such as Five Finger Rapids and Pelly Crossing.

As you arrive into Dawson City, remember those who made the arduous journey from southern Alaska hauling supplies over a treacherous mountain pass, risking severe weather conditions and navigating the mighty Yukon River. Luckily today’s journey is a much more leisurely affair!

Experience the vibrant city by night visiting Gold Rush era establishments - enjoy a drink at former brothel Bombay Peggy’s, challenge yourself with the ‘Sourtoe Cocktail’ and visit Canada’s oldest Casino, Diamond Tooth Gerties, for an evening full of entertainment!

Day 2:

The unique, buzzing town of Dawson City is your base for an adventurous short break in Gold Rush territory. The gold rush of 1896 brought nearly forty thousand people to the small settlement of Dawson City. This morning learn about what enticed these gold rush ‘stampeders’ to make the laborious journey to this remote outpost. Local guides will first tour the historic, authentic town of Dawson before heading to the Gold Field where you will visit the dredge No.4 National Historic Site and Claim 33 for some gold panning - gold guaranteed! Learn about the rich history, stories and characters of the gold rush, as well as modern life in remote Dawson City.

This afternoon take some time to stroll the historic wooden boardwalks, visiting sights such as the Commissioner’s Residence, SS Keno, and the cabins of writers Jack London and Robert Service. In contrast to the rustic log cabins and opulence of the Commissioner’s Residence is Dänojà Zho or ‘Long Ago House’. The cultural centre depicts the history of the local First Nations Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, a history several centuries older than the gold rush.

Day 3:

Travel north along the first stretch of the famous Dempster Highway today as part of a guided tour of Tombstone Provincial Park. This unique wilderness of rugged mountain peaks and sub-arctic landscape offers outstanding wildlife viewing, hiking and scenic vistas. On a an easy hike along the North Klondike River you will experience the truly pristine wilderness of Tombstone. The Interpretive Centre is home to a Natural History Display where you can learn more about the geological and cultural history of the region.

Return from Tombstone this afternoon, taking a side trip to the Midnight Dome for a 360° panorama of Dawson and the Klondike. With stunning photography opportunities and breathtaking views, the Midnight Dome is the perfect place to spend your final night in historic Dawson.

Day 4:

Your Klondike experience draws to a close today. Catch your connecting flight back south to Whitehorse. Choose to extend your time in The Yukon, adding nights at a luxury lodge near to Whitehorse, fly over the awe-inspiring glacier in Kluane National Park or drive the southern lake region, venturing into southern Alaska to see where Klondike pioneers began their journey.
