The winter season on Northern Norway’s mainland brings with it shorter daylight hours and longer dark nights for optimum Aurora viewings. Imagine a land where the sun sets, but doesn’t return until weeks later, a land where night time prevails and welcomes dark skies throughout the day, as well as the night. Where stars light the way, and the Aurora can show anytime. This is the Northern Lights season in Svalbard, Norway’s remote island archipelago located high in the Arctic Sea, the most northerly habited place on earth. Between the winter months, the Aurora season offers a magical time to visit this unique environment and gives you an opportunity to witness this natural phenomenon at any time of day or night, take part in aurora searching activities and stay in the boutique Funken Lodge for three nights.

This short break is available from October to January and can be included as part of a longer stay in Svalbard or combine it with Tromsø on mainland Norway.

Each season in Svalbard has its own unique charm. Following the constant darkness of the Northern Lights Winter season, the light gradually returns each day and the wilderness becomes more and more inviting to be outdoors and explore. This period, from March to mid-May is commonly known to us as Spring. Here in Svalbard it’s still full winter with a snow covered landscape, but changes are noticeable every day - from virtual twilight during the day in March to the never-ending light of the Midnight Sun in late April and May. This transition also means a change of focus to far more action packed activities taking advantage of the deep snow and beautiful light conditions.
