Gateway to Greenland

Short Break in Kangerlussuaq Greenland

The mighty Greenland Ice Cap reaches out to the small town of Kangerlussuaq. Placed between the Ice Cap and the end of a 160km fjord, Kangerlussuaq’s sheltered position lends itself to more stable climatic conditions and has consequently become a gateway into Greenland. This four night holiday is based within touching distance of the great Ice Cap where Ice Cap and glacier adventures await. Witness Greenland’s spectacular scenery and wildlife - like nothing you have seen before. The tour can also be extended with an overnight stay on the Ice Cap itself, if you are looking for an adventure.

Your local guides will meet and greet you at the airport where it is a short walk to the hotel for check-in. Kangerlussuaq has a population of around 500 people and literally grew from the end of the runway and has since been a hub for international arrivals and adventurous travellers looking to explore the Ice Cap.

During the afternoon you will have a guided walk of the local area before transferring to a local restaurant Roklubben for your welcome dinner. You’ll have a chance to try local Greenlandic cuisine.

DAY 2:

After breakfast you’ll finally get to stand on the awesome Ice Cap during a day trip by 4x4. Depart on the only road into the inland Ice Cap which introduces you to the Arctic desert - a wild and endless landscape of compacted ice and snow. You’ll drive along rivers and through ancient glacier valleys directly to the Ice Cap. The mountain tracks narrow creating a spectacular journey with plenty of opportunity to stop and admire the incredible views.

Return to Kangerlussuaq in the afternoon and evening at leisure. Dinner is available at the hotel restaurant (supplementary cost).

Today you’ll be able to choose from our optional excursions which include:

Guided hiking tour to Sugar Loaf Mountain (4-5 hours) - This is an active hike to a mountain summit where you’ll enjoy fabulous views to the inland Ice Cap. Lunch is included.

Wildlife Tour (1.5 hours) - Join a short nature safari by mini-bus to search for local populations of musk oxen and reindeer roaming near to Kangerlussuaq.

Helicopter tour (25 mins / 45 mins) - Enjoy a spectacular aerial view of the Ice Cap and wildlife on a helicopter tour. The tours fly at low altitude to give a close-up view of the scenery and musk oxen.

If you wish you can upgrade to an unforgettable night hiking and sleeping in tents on the Ice Cap.
