Day 1: Exploring Calgary - Gateway to the Canadian Rockies

Your adventure begins in Calgary, the gateway to the Canadian Rockies. Spend the day at your own pace, exploring the city’s public art and sculptures, strolling along the scenic Bow River Pathway, or savouring a meal at one of Calgary’s many excellent restaurants. With a vibrant arts scene and a range of dining options, the city is the perfect introduction to your Rockies adventure.

Day 2: Travel to Waterton Lakes National Park - Summit Lake

Meet your guide and fellow hikers after breakfast, before heading south through the wide-open landscapes of southern Alberta. Watch the mountains gradually rise on the horizon. Waterton Lakes National Park is a picturesque setting full of charm and natural beauty, where you will spend the next 4 days.

After lunch, lace up your boots for your first real taste of hiking in the Canadian Rockies. Your hike to Summit Lake is gentle but rewarding, winding through lush forests and alpine meadows. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildflowers, deer, and other local wildlife. At Summit Lake, take a moment to enjoy the stunning mountain views and learn more about the region from your knowledgeable guide.

Check into your home for the next few nights at Waterton Lakes Lodge, where you can either enjoy an evening meal on-site or explore the nearby town’s restaurants at your leisure.

Day 3: Exploring the Candaian Rockies - Goat Lake Trail

Today, venture deep into the back country on the Goat Lake Trail, a hike that combines panoramic lakeside vistas with high alpine scenery. The first few kilometres provide a gentle warm-up through lush forests, before the trail climbs via a series of switchbacks. As the trees thin, the scenery opens up to reveal expansive views across the valley. With some luck, you may spot the trail’s namesake, mountain goats grazing along the rocky outcrops.

Pause for lunch at Goat Lake, home to lively Cutthroat Trout, and enjoy the serenity of this quieter, lesser-known trail. This back country hike is a perfect way to experience the peace and tranquillity of hiking in the Canadian Rockies, far from the crowds.

This evening, step out to a nearby restaurant for dinner this evening or dine at the hotel restaurant.

Day 4: Crypt Lake Trail Adventure

Today is the showstopper: the renowned Crypt Lake Trail, consistently ranked among the top hikes in Canada. Your day begins with a short boat ride across Upper Waterton Lake, giving access to a remote trailhead that cannot be reached by road.

From here, the trail climbs steadily past waterfalls, cliffs, and hanging valleys. Navigate a tunnel carved through rock and ascend a steel ladder bolted to the mountainside. At the summit, your reward is Crypt Lake, an aquamarine alpine jewel nestled between the peaks and straddling the U.S. border.

Enjoy a lakeside lunch before retracing your steps, taking in the sweeping vistas on the descent. This final day of hiking in the Canadian Rockies blends natural beauty with a bit of adrenaline. Celebrate your achievements tonight with a farewell dinner in Waterton, sharing stories and memories with your fellow adventurers.
