Lofoten Islands - Midnight Sun and Rorbu Experience
The Lofoten Islands have long inspired travellers to their rocky shores. Picturesque fishing villages, pristine beaches and access to seas and mountains make the Lofoten Islands a much loved destination. The ocean with its Gulf Stream brings milder climates and of course the abundance of cod, or ‘skrei’ in Norwegian. Throughout the year Magnetic North offers tailor made holidays that offer opportunities for nature based activities as well as trips at sea. You’ll be staying in a traditional fisherman’s cabin (Rorbu) overlooking the wild Atlantic coast from where the midnight sun shines from the end of May to mid July each year.

There are many opportunities for guided and independent walking trails around the islands. We’ll organise your guide or recommend some trails for you to follow.
Lofoten offers ideal leisurely cycling terrain – its highest point is just 130 metres above sea level. We’ll organise routes and cycle hire for you to enjoy the islands on two wheels.
Travel with a guide to explore the coastal areas of the islands by sea kayak. We can offer trips of anything between 3 hours and 7 days.
Whale and wildlife watching
From May until September, travel out with a guided tour to view the impressive great sperm whales which frequent the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. Your guide will take you to see the whales without disturbing their peace. You’ll also have the chance to view local seabird colonies including the sea eagle.
Fishing with the locals
Gather your sea legs and venture out with an experienced fisherman to get first hand experience of this important industry. Help catch the fish by pulling in the lines and pots onboard. You’ll catch an abundance of fish including cod and halibut. Learn about the journey from sea to plate by visiting a fish processing plant before enjoying a 5 course feast in the evening featuring your very own catch.
To get up close to the rugged Lofoten coastline, take a trip out with a small group on a raft. You’ll see the most remote points of the islands including an abandoned settlement and some ancient cave dwellings.
Probably one of the most northerly places to surf in the world. Visiting Unstad, a small settlement on the Vestvågøy Island, you’ll be surrounded by mountains on three sides, opening out to a bay which makes it a perfect spot for surfing. The bay is suitable for both experienced and beginner surfers alike.
We offer trips year round, but the activities here are available in the summer months from May until September.
