WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

DAY 1:

Welcome to Iceland! Individual transfer by shuttle bus from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík centre where you’ll spend the night at the four star hotel Radisson Blu 1919 in one of the deluxe rooms. We’ll provide you with our recommendations of places to explore in Iceland’s capital city.

DAY 2:

After breakfast at the hotel you’ll meet your guide for a guided tour of Reykjavik and its landmarks. The Hallgrímskirkja church is one of the star attractions of the city. Its iconic tower rises to a magnificent 74.5 metre high peak. The tour includes a visit to the observation tower of the Hallgrímskirkja church offering incredible panoramic views across the city. Then you’ll learn about the history and culture of Icelandic cheese and the unique dairy product called ‘skyr’, similar to yoghurt in taste made from strained cheese. You’ll have the chance to taste a range of Icelandic cheeses and learn about the special qualities of the Icelandic dairy cow. Lunch will be served at the cheese school buttery.

After lunch you’ll depart Reykjavik for the famous Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site. In this location the oldest legislative assembly in the world was founded. This is one of Iceland's most fascinating places both geologically and for the role it plays in the country's history and sense of national identity.

The last stop today is at the thermal baths Fontana in Laugarvatn, where healing geothermal heat simmers directly from the ground to the backdrop of beautiful mountain ranges. Laugarvatn Fontana is a highlight of any wellness retreat in Iceland. Here you’ll find three geothermal hot baths, a sauna, a warm sandy beach and access to the pristine waters of Lake Laugarvatn. Relax in the warming waters surrounded by winter landscapes before continuing your journey to the luxury country hotel Grímsborgir located in South Iceland, where you’ll stay for the next three nights.

After a gourmet dinner at the hotel, your expert tour guide will provide you with a workshop about the Northern Lights and teach you how to take photos of this natural phenomenon. After that you’ll be invited to step into the darkness or soak in the hotel's outdoor hot tubs and check if the Northern Lights will make an appearance in the night sky.

DAY 3:

After breakfast you’ll visit Gullfoss, “the golden falls“, a double waterfall that tumbles 34 metres into the Hvítá river. Nearby are the Geysir geothermal fields with a variety of hot springs and bubbling hot pools. The original geyser is now dormant but has been replaced by Strokkur "the Churn" which erupts at 5-10 minute intervals. Afterwards you’ll visit the 3000 year old explosion crater called Kerið, now filled with water to a depth of 55 metres. The entire lake with its steep circular slopes resembles an ancient amphitheatre.

In the greenhouse village of Hveragerði you’ll have a chance to meet a local man and learn all about life with seismic activity and geothermal heat. During a short and easy walk with your local guide you’ll visit hot springs and other natural wonders. You’ll have the opportunity to boil an egg in a hot spring and taste bread baked in hot steam - one of the region's culinary specialities.

Afterwards you’ll travel to the coastal villages of Stokkseyri and Eyrarbakki with its colourful houses. You’ll stroll along the black sands and enjoy the epic coastal scenery. During the tour you’ll get the opportunity to taste shark meat, dried fish and Brennivin schnapps for a true taste of Iceland. After awakening your senses with local delicacies you’ll enjoy a langoustine dinner at a nearby restaurant. On the return journey to your hotel, you’ll have another chance to hunt the Northern Lights in areas with very low light pollution.

DAY 4:

After breakfast you’ll set off for the South coast. You’ll start at the high but narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall which plunges over the mountain. There‘s an interesting trail that goes behind the fall – if you are prepared to get wet! Further east you’ll stop at the Eyjafjallajökull Information Center and learn about living next to a glacier and an active volcano. In the small village of Skógar you’ll visit one of Iceland's finest folk museums. This museum contains an outstanding collection of farm and domestic artefacts typical of Iceland’s past as well as turf-built houses. Nearby is Skógafoss waterfall which is 60 meters high and one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country.

For the rest of the afternoon, choose between an easy guided walk on a nearby glacier, or continue the bus tour to explore a black lava beach with bird cliffs.

Enjoy dinner and accommodation back at Hotel Grímsborgir. This evening a video presentation about the Northern Lights will be shown before a chance to view them for real outside in the dark skies.

DAY 5:

Today you’ll head to Reykjanes Peninsula where you’ll travel the less beaten path and see the region’s many unusual geological features, hot springs, lunar-like landscapes, bird cliffs, light houses and quaint fishing villages. You’ll visit a Viking ship and history museum that tells the story about the Viking expansion across the North Atlantic. It will be topped off with a unique lunch as you take part in a seafood and crab feast.

The day’s adventure concludes with a soak in the warming waters of the Blue Lagoon. The comfort experience package includes the use of a towel and a bathrobe, a drink of your choice and a volcano scrub or algae mask. The group is invited to a farewell dinner with delicious lamb as the main course at the Hotel Northern Light Inn, an excellent location for a Northern Lights hunt.

If you are leaving the trip the following morning, you’ll stay overnight at Hotel Northern Lights Inn. The rest of the group will continue to Reykjavik where they’ll stay at the Hotel Radisson Blu 1919 (please see the package extension information below).
