Autumn Colours;Leaf to Sky

Iisakki Glass Village

One of our favourite times of year to visit Finnish Lapland is during the autumn months of September and October. As the days grow shorter and temperatures cool, the leaves turn from summer green to a riot of red, orange and brown and the night sky comes alive with the dance of the Northern lights (Aurora Borealis). Fill your days exploring scenic hiking trails, free from the summer crowds, whilst nights are spent curled up by an open campfire or in your Glass roofed cabin, waiting for the Northern lights to show.

Day 1

Touchdown at Kuusamo airport in Finnish Lapland. You will be met by your driver, who will transfer you the short 30 minute journey to your home for the next three nights, Lisakki village.Set on the on the shores of the beautiful Lake Rukajarvi, surrounded by areas of stunning scenery, your glass cabin awaits. Boasting floor to ceiling windows and a glass roof, you truly feel part of this glorious setting. If you want a little privacy draw the curtains across the windows, lie back and enjoy the ever changing skies overhead. Dinner is served in the nearby restaurant.

Day 2

Savour a hearty breakfast before heading off for a day of adventure. The surrounding countryside of Ruka and Oulanka national park are criss crossed with hiking trails, designated routes are specially signposted to ensure that you don’t lose your way. Multi-coloured woodlands, gentle hills and rushing rivers are all waiting to be explored. Enjoy your lunch at a choice of picnic spots along the way, many of which include areas for lighting a campfire (wood is supplied free of charge), boiling water for tea or coffee and grilling some local sausages. Back at your Glass Cabin, away from the light pollution, sit back and watch the skies for those magical ribbons of light.

Day 3

A full day to enjoy at your leisure, spend the morning enjoying one of the many fabulous activities that are available in the surrounding region, including:

Mountain biking
Fat biking
White water rafting
Wildlife watching

After the exursion of yesterday's hike, and this mornings activity, time to sample the greatest love of the Finnish people, a Sauna. There are approximately 5 million people in Finland and over 3 million saunas, children have even been born in a sauna! Throw some water on the hot coals and let the waves of steam roll over you or grab the bunch of birch branches, known as a ‘Vihta’, dip them in the water and gently beat them across your skin, it helps to increase your circulation. With temperatures rising it is time for part two of your sauna experience, step outside and jump into the nearby lake, it’s very invigorating. Go back and forth to the sauna as many times as you like until you feel fully refreshed and maybe just a little bit Finnish.

Lucy, Magnetic North Travel client on her honeymoon experience

Another standout was the Finnish sauna experience. We were treated to a luxury Finnish sauna with a local guide explaining the traditions including the “löyly” and silver birch. We then did something we never thought we would do, and plunged ourselves into an almost-frozen lake! The experience was exhilarating and surprisingly refreshing after the heat of the sauna. It definitely ridded our bodies of some of our London-tension!
