Embrace the cottage lifestyle

Luxury cottage break in Nuuksio national park

Imagine a place where you can wake up in a genuine log cabin, step out onto your private front deck, coffee (or tea) in hand, and be immersed in views of soaring forests and shimmering lakes. Where relaxation comes easy but with so much beauty around you to explore, it becomes an afterthought, something to look forward to after a day hiking, paddle boarding or cycling, visiting local farms and immersing yourself in the Finnish culture. All of this less than an hours drive from Helsinki makes it such an easy choice, but do you stay for two nights or a week.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

Day 1 Helsinki to Nature

Fly into Helsinki, collect your hire car at the airport, or maybe spend a night in the city before collecting your hire car, there is plenty to see in the fascinating city after all. It is not long after you leave the airport or the big city behind that you very quickly immerse yourself in the glorious Finnish countryside. Vast swathes of green forest border grand lakes, providing an outdoor playground that is only limited by your imagination. Set on the shores of Lake Kaitlampi, with Nuuksio National park for a back garden, lies Hawkhill, where your lake view cottage or villa awaits your arrival. Run by the same family for three generations, with an ethos of nature at its heart, Hawkhill is a secret you won’t want to share and only 45 minutes from Helsinki. The fully equipped hand carved traditional log cabins are spacious and welcoming, each with their own terrace, from which you can admire the scenery around you on long lazy summer days, and a private beach, with your own rowing boat for a little time on the water or maybe even a swim. Your cabin will be fully stocked with a selection of food and recipes to create delicious meals during your stay, along with a variety of snacks to be enjoyed at anytime. After settling into your cabin it is time for a little exploration and there is no better way than from the back of a paddle board. A short drive from your cabin, in Nuuksio National park, lies Hawk lake, the perfect starting point for your paddling experience. The calm waters of the national park offer a tranquil setting from which to observe nature and the animals that inhabit the forests and lakes. Paddle boarding is a fun and unforgettable experience that nearly anyone can try, but if it’s your first time you may get a little wet.

Day 2 Hiking trails and reindeer

After a refreshing nights’ sleep and a traditional Finnish breakfast, it is time to get deep into the nature that surrounds you. Head out onto the Hawkhill nature trail which twists and turns it way through the picture perfect countryside. The easily followed trail has been carefully marked, providing the opportunity to experience wonderful rock formations and pine forests, along with views over Lake Kaitlampi. The trail has 10 fascinating stops with information on the nature of the Finnish forest and how the area evolved from the ice age to the current time. As you amble through the forest in the summer months it is possible to pick up berries but choose carefully, your hosts will be able to help you. This afternoon hop in your car and head to the Nuuksio Reindeer park, Finland’s southern most reindeer park. The reindeer came from Inari in Finnish Lapland but they are well adapted to their new home. Spend time feeding the reindeer some of their favourite lichen, take photographs of these very tame animals and learn how they form a very important part of Finnish life for the Sami people of the North. If you are still feeling full of energy after the morning forest trail you can hire a bicycle and make the trip to the reindeer park through Nuuksio national park. It can be a bit hilly along the way but it is well worth the work out. After the exersions of today it is time for that other staple of the Finnish life, a sauna. Pour water across the hot coals and let the steam soothe any aching muscles. Sit back and relax. Of course if you are a true Finn, the sauna has to be accompanied by a quick dip in the lake, before returning to the steam. You have now set yourself up for an evening of relaxation and calm, sat on your private deck, admiring the view around you with only the sound of birds and maybe the crackle of your outdoor fire pit for company, truly special.

Day 3 No hurry to leave

It is your final morning at Hawkhill but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t time to savour life in the heart of nature a little longer. Maybe start your day with an invigorating sunrise yoga session in the middle of the forest or at the lake shore, surrounded by the natural healing energy of the countryside. Enjoy a light breakfast, take an early morning hike along one of the shorter trails in the national park or row out onto the lake, as the morning mist still lingers along the surface, and take an invigorating swim. Leave this special place with a mind and body full of forest energy.
