WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

DAY 1:

Welcome to Iceland and the start of your adventure. Transfer to Reykjavik where your trip starts and ends. No doubt, you’ll be inspired by Reykjavik’s cultural scene, its great choice of restaurants and the warm welcome from the locals. The rest of the day is at leisure. To help you make the most of your stay, you’ll receive some ideas of places to eat and visit in Reykjavik.

Overnight at Fosshotel Baron – a clean and comfortable lodging in the heart of Reykjavik.

DAY 2:

After breakfast your guide will meet you at your hotel for the start of the escorted tour program.

Your first stop will be Reykjavik Volcano House documenting the eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull and Fimmvörðulháls in 2010. The day continues on the ‘Golden Circle’ route to the west of Reykjavik. You’ll visit Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, and where the Althingi, the oldest legislative assembly in the world was founded. Your first encounter with the unique geology of rugged Iceland is sure to impress you as you observe the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Your tour continues to the hot springs at Geysir where natural springs gurgle and bubble below the ground until the pressure builds and they explode into the air. The geyser Strokkur spouts at irregular intervals between 5 and 15 minutes so you’ll need to be ready with the camera.

Next stop is the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall which will be partly frozen at this time of year. The waters tumble 34 metres into the Hvita River.

Your day concludes with an overnight stay in the Icelandic countryside in Hella next to the Ranga River. You’ll stay in simple but cosy cabins at Árhús Cottages and dinner will be served at the nearby restaurant.

After dark, your guide will bring to life the mysteries and science behind the elusive Northern Lights. Dress up warm and venture outside to find out if your luck is in.

DAY 3:

Today is all about the ice. You’ll set off in the morning for a memorable journey along Iceland’s south coast. Eventually you’ll reach Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon – one of Iceland’s astonishing natural wonders. Marvel at the floating icebergs which tear free from the glacier Breiðamerkurjökull and float along the narrow, but deep lake. There’s no better place to witness the contrast of fire and ice with the black sooty beach against the layers of azure blue ice.

The last stop of the day is a visit to the vast Vatnajökull National Park - the largest national park in Europe. A land of superlatives, Vatnajökull is also home to Europe’s largest glacier and highest mountains.

After a day of awe-inspiring landscapes, it’s time for some rest or sky-gazing, depending on the Aurora forecast, of course. A movie presentation about the Northern Lights will be showing tonight as background information.

You’ll stay at the Fosshotel Núpar in the Vatnajökull region. The hotel sits in front of the peaks of Vatnajökull National Park and offers comfortable, modern rooms and a friendly service.

DAY 4:

Your journey back to Reykjavik today is punctuated with the sights of the sea, waterfalls and volcanoes. Crossing the moss covered Laki lava field you’ll first visit the village of Vik. Here you’ll be able to wander along the black lava beach and gaze at the bird cliffs at Reynisfjara beach. You’ll pass the glacier Mýrdalsjökull and the infamous volcano Eyjafjallajökull and continue to Skógafoss waterfall – another impressive natural sight. Continuing west you’ll reach the narrow Seljalandsfoss waterfall which plunges over the mountain. A walk behind the waterfall is a rare but wet experience.

By the evening, it is time to return to the city of Reykjavik for your final night in Iceland. An optional Northern Lights bus tour or fjord cruise can be booked on the spot, if the weather conditions are suitable. You’ll stay at the Fosshotel Baron.

DAY 5:

Today it is time to bid farewell to Iceland and return to the airport for your return flight. Your bus shuttle ticket will be booked for your departing flight. It is also possible to extend your stay in Iceland with additional nights and adventures. We highly recommend fitting in a visit to the Blue Lagoon during your stay. Please get in touch with the team to find out more.
