ITINERARY

Begin your independent rail holiday with a few leisurely days in Halifax, on Canada's east coast. Once you have arrived, make your own way to your downtown hotel. Stroll along the historic Waterfront boardwalk, where lively shops and maritime heritage set the scene. Enjoy dinner at one of the city’s excellent seafood restaurants, sampling fresh, local flavours at your own pace as you settle into your self-guided Canada adventure.

Spend the morning exploring Halifax on a guided sightseeing tour, discovering the city’s rich history and vibrant waterfront. In the afternoon, your discovery continues with a visit to the picturesque fishing village of Peggy’s Cove, where the iconic lighthouse provides a perfect photo opportunity. Enjoy the scenic coastal drive with a friendly guide, immersing yourself in the charm of Atlantic Canada.

Your small-group sightseeing adventure begins with a pick-up directly from your hotel in downtown Halifax, before heading out towards iconic Peggy’s Cove lighthouse. Along the way, your friendly and informative guide will share facts and tips about the area. You’ll have the opportunity to take photos with the most photographed lighthouse in Canada and free time is included here to explore the picturesque fishing village of Peggy’s Cove, which is built on the granite rocks and offers stunning ocean views.  
 
After your visit to Peggy’s Cove, you return to Halifax and pay a visit to historic Citadel Hill. Here, you learn about the military history of the hill and see the Highlander re-enactment interpreters dressed in traditional uniforms from the 1800s. Following this, your guide will take you in a narrated driving tour of downtown Halifax, where you pass by some of the city’s most notable points of interest including: the Titanic cemetery (Fairview Lawn Cemetery), City Gardens, Pier 21, Halifax Farmers Market and Point Pleasant Park. Note: Citadel Hill availability may be affected by private functions or weather.
 
Enjoy a day at leisure in Halifax, soaking up the Atlantic charm. Take a walk to Murphy’s Restaurant on the Cable Wharf to sample their traditional lobster roll, then venture to a friendly pub to enjoy a local beverage accompanied by lively East Coast music. Head back to your hotel for an early night as your self-guided Canada train journey begins tomorrow!
Make your way to the train station for a noon departure on ‘The Ocean’, beginning your self-guided Canada train journey along Canada’s stunning Atlantic Coast. Relax in comfortable sleeper cabins, enjoy regional meals in the dining car, and take in sweeping views of the rugged maritime landscapes as the train travels through Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Québec.
