Polar Bear Wildlife Watching Holiday in Churchill

Frozen lands of the Polar Bear

It might be cold outside but nothing beats that warm feeling you get when you see your first polar bear as it pads across the frozen tundra. The giant paws, the sleek white coat and that loping gait are unmistakable. Maybe they will have cubs with them, maybe it will come up close to the Arctic crawler you are travelling in, imagine the photographs. Combine two amazing days out on the frozen wastes with the opportunity to try dog sledding, staying in a cozy log cabin and learning about the polar bear capital of the world, and you have a winter adventure that should not be missed.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

Day 1 Winnipeg

Welcome to the capital of Manitoba, whilst your time here is short there is plenty to explore. Winnipeg's Exchange District is one of the most iconic and vibrant neighbourhoods in the city, with 20 square blocks of buildings built between 1880 and 1920 now housing some of the finest up and coming eateries and bars. Visit The Canadian museum of human rights, go skating outdoors or go to an Ice hockey game, Canada’s national sport.

Day 2 Winnipeg to Churchill

This morning you start your travels up to the frozen north with a 2 hour flight to Churchill, the polar bear capital of the world. The views of the snow covered tundra from the air are spectacular. On arrival into Churchill, settle into your warm and welcoming room at Lazy bear lodge, where you will learn all about the days ahead. As darkness falls, step outside and, if conditions are right, you may see the dance of the northern lights across the sky. (Meals: Breakfast and one main course in the Lazy bear Cafe on a night of your choice)

Day 3 In search of Polar Bears

The day you have been waiting for has arrived! Climb aboard the oversized arctic crawler, a specially designed tundra vehicle, keeping warm in the closed cabin whilst you make your way into the Churchill Wildlife Management Area in search of your first polar bear. Your guides will provide you with a wealth of information and stories, pointing out areas of interest and other animals you may encounter including arctic fox, arctic hare and camouflaged tarmigan. You will head to spots where the bears are known to gather as the seas of Hudson Bay start to freeze over, allowing the bears to hunt on the ice pack. Curious and far from shy, the bears will sometimes come right alongside the vehicles to sneak a peek at their visitors. Step out onto the viewing platform at the back of the vehicle and you may come face to face with a polar bear! (Breakfast, Lunch, snacks and beverages are included during the day)

Day 4 Delights of Churchill

After the thrill of yesterdays’ polar bear viewing it is time to catch your breath and learn a little more about Churchill, all wrapped up with a little evening excitement. Join the Cultural and Heritage Tour as it takes you through Churchill and the surrounding area. You will explore the various historic sites including Cape Merry, the Polar Bear Jail (outside), the famous plane crash site of “Miss Piggy”, and many other historic spots that make Churchill the town it is today. Don’t forget to pick up some souvenirs of your stay. This evening the delights keep on coming as you meet the happiest workers in the snow, husky dogs. Seat yourself on the sled pulled by a team of excitable huskys and prepare yourself for an exhilarating 1-2 mile ride across the crisp snow, maybe with the northern lights for company. The dogs love to run and revel in a hug at the end of the ride even more. With your heart still pumping step inside a warm tent and savour fresh bannock, local berry jam, coffee, hot chocolate and tea, you will learn how the dogs are trained, plus hear many entertaining stories. (Meals: breakfast)

Your time in Churchill has come to an end but not before you have had one more opportunity to view polar bears from the arctic crawler. Checkout from your room, climb onboard and prepare yourself for your polar bear encounter. This time you know what to look for, will you spot them before your guide? How close will they come to the crawler?
