At Bjornfjell Mountain Lodge you have the opportunity to feel part of the Norwegian cabin culture. Stay comfortable inside cosy cabins while enjoying the nature outdoors, as well as the nature that has been brought inside the cabins. Relax with a cup of tea or coffee while the fire is sparkling in the fireplace. You may sit comfortably on the windowsills under a wool blanket and read a book while waiting for the Northern lights to appear. Bjornfjell Mountain Lodge is located only 20 km from Alta city centre but still in an area sheltered from the light pollution from the city. You can just go outside the cabin to see Aurora dancing. The cabins are placed in the terrain in a way that gives privacy to everyone. The view is astonishing; from your windows you can see the valleys, plateaus and mountains surrounding Alta.

Today the winter action begins. After breakfast, you’ll take a transfer (30 minutes) to the Husky Kennels for a dog-sledding safari. Enjoy the thrill as you drive your own sled team on the snowy trails.

Back at the Lodge, you have time to totally unwind and let the seconds tick by. Find a quiet spot and catch up with your favourite author, play some board games or head to the communal area of the lodge and make some new friends. Norwegian cabin culture places emphasis on being social and active with those you’re travelling with, whether it's inside or out in the beautiful nature.

In the evening, take advantage of the wilderness location and head outdoors on an activity accompanied by a guide. You’ll travel to the top of the mountain where the view takes your breath away and if the sky is clear above there is a chance that the mystical Northern Lights may come out to play. Dinner cooked over an open fire is included.

A Taste Of Dog Sledding

A Taste Of Dog Sledding

You’ll be picked up from one of the meeting points in central Alta and driven to the starting point of your adventure. Upon arrival, you'll be provided with warm clothing, including snowsuits, mittens, hats, and winter boots. Be sure to wear your own warm underwear, like wool or fleece, to stay cosy. A brief, clear training session will introduce you to the basics of driving a sled before you enter the dog park, where the friendly Alaskan huskies are eagerly waiting. Each dog has its own house with a name tag, and you’ll receive a card with the names of the dogs in your team. It’s up to you to prepare your dogs by finding the right harnesses and getting everything ready—don’t worry, assistance is always available if needed.

Once the dogs are ready, the adventure begins. The dogs are eager to go, and as the gate opens, you’ll head out into the forest, enjoying the quiet and the energy of the dogs. Your journey will take you through the forest, open landscapes, and along the Alta River, with a chance to ride on the river itself when the ice has melted. You’ll ride two by two on a sled, with the option to switch places halfway through. After your adventure, you’ll return to the dog kennel to help settle the dogs back into their houses. Finally, gather around the fire to enjoy something hot to drink and homemade pastries. The guides will happily share stories from their training, races, and how they care for the dogs.

Polar Night Bonfire Trip

Polar Night Bonfire Trip

This evening, take a magical journey to the top of a nearby mountain, where the view is indescribable and the only company is the animals that call this unspoilt wilderness home. After receiving warm winter clothing, the night begins as you board a sled, either pulled by a snowmobile or slope prepper to make your way up the mountain. Once you arrive at the cosy cabin “Bjørnehiet” perched atop the peak, your guide will begin preparing your gourmet meal from local ingredients, before cooking it in the most natural way they know how: on the bonfire. Let the stillness embrace you as you look to the vast expanse of star filled sky, and hopefully catch a glimpse of the mystical Northern Lights dancing above you. As you cosy up on reindeer skins around the fire, listen to mythical tales and stories about the Aurora and, if you’re lucky, snap some pictures as it ripples across the sky. To round off your evening, take to the freshly prepared slopes on a sled, and race back down to the lodge.
