You'll start your day at Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. This stunning cascade offers a unique perspective, as a short hike behind the falls lets you witness the water tumbling from a 60-metre cliff. Be sure to bring a raincoat for the journey behind the curtain of water, where the power of the falls and the trembling ground create a perfect photo opportunity.
Further along the coast, you'll visit Skógafoss, another breathtaking waterfall nestled in a narrow gorge. Here, the Skógá River plunges 60 metres before continuing its journey toward the Atlantic Ocean. For an elevated view, climb the staircase alongside the waterfall to reach the platform above, where the views of the surrounding landscape are unforgettable.
The adventure continues with a glacier hike at either Skaftafell or Sólheimajökull. Covering 9% of Iceland, glaciers are an integral part of the country’s landscape. After gearing up with crampons, helmets, and ice axes, you’ll set off on a guided hike to explore crevasses, moulins, and other striking ice formations.
Depending on conditions, you may even have the chance to visit an ice cave, though this cannot be guaranteed due to weather and glacier conditions.
In the evening, you'll check into your hotel, where your guide will provide insight into the chances of witnessing the Northern Lights. If conditions are favourable, they’ll suggest nearby viewing spots. While the aurora is a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed, the period from September to March offers the highest likelihood of a sighting. With clear skies and a bit of luck, you might experience this awe-inspiring display of nature.
Please note that the order of activities may change due to weather and will be decided locally.
You’ll begin your day at Jökulsárlón, the Glacier Lagoon, a stunning 200-metre-deep lagoon formed by the melting waters of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier. Enormous icebergs break off from Breiðamerkurjökull year-round, filling the lagoon with floating ice blocks that drift south. During this tour, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the icebergs up close. You might also spot seals swimming in the lagoon or relaxing atop the icebergs during the summer months.
Just across the road lies Diamond Beach, where the icebergs from Jökulsárlón are carried by the tide into the Atlantic Ocean. The icebergs are then tossed back to the shore, creating a breathtaking sight on the black sand beach. The ice blocks, in varying shapes and sizes, sparkle like diamonds in the daylight, with shades of white and blue forming striking contrasts against the dark beach.
From October to March, your tour includes a visit to an Ice Cave, where your guide will share their expertise on these incredible natural formations. You’ll have the chance to fully appreciate the extraordinary features of the cave, and if you’re lucky, you may witness the magnificent blue hue that makes these caves so special.
Next, you’ll head to Reynisfjara, the Black Sand Beach. Here, the mighty waves of the Atlantic crash against unique basalt pillars that rise from the cliffs above the sand. In the distance, the cliffs of Dýrhólaey are visible. This area is also a paradise for birdwatchers, as puffins, razorbills, and many other species nest on the cliffs during the summer months.
Your day concludes with a return journey to Reykjavík, with an expected arrival around 8 p.m., depending on weather and road conditions.
