We’d be happy to check your travel options to Alta in order to meet the transfer departure time.

Northern Lights Chase (Holmen Lodge)

Northern Lights Chase (Holmen Lodge)

This Northern Lights adventure is exclusive to guests staying at Holmen Lodge. Travelling in a car or minivan, you'll join a knowledgeable guide as they search for the greatest vantage point to see the Aurora Borealis along the coast or inland plateau. The Northern Lights are elusive and there is no guarantee to see them, but the tour guide will choose the route that, given the current weather and atmospheric conditions, gives you the best possibility of seeing the Aurora Borealis while also outlining the significance of the phenomenon in the history of Alta as it relates to scientific research and understanding.
Holmen Husky Lodge

Holmen Husky Lodge

Holmen Husky Lodge is one of Europe’s top dog sledding kennels and provides an array of exciting dog-sledding adventures close to Alta in Arctic Northern Norway. A place where deep snow, northern lights, and world class huskies come together for something unforgettable.

The renovated “Barn” is the hub of the Lodge where you’ll find the reception, lounge and restaurant, and where guests can enjoy delicious home cooked meals made using local sourced ingredients. The breakfast buffet offers a wide range of local delicacies like smoked salmon and freshly baked bread, in addition to Norwegian cold cuts and cereals. Dinner is often a time for storytelling and socialising with fellow guests and your hosts. There is a sauna and outdoor hot tub to soothe any tired muscles and can be pre-booked by guests.

Accommodation is based in the Forest Suites at the lodge, providing rustic luxury with modern comforts. These large individual cabins have a separate living room with a 5-metre tall window offering a panoramic view of the untouched forest outside. The upstairs bedroom also boasts a large window, perfect for admiring the stars or catching a glimpse of the northern lights. With just seven suites at the lodge, you can be sure of an intimate and engaging stay.

After breakfast you’ll be shown around the kennels and receive warm winter clothing before learning how to handle your own dog-sled team. Driving in pairs, you’ll head along the snowy tracks and on the frozen Alta River, swapping drivers on route. Afterwards, warm up with hot drinks and lunch back at the Lodge. The Husky Safari lasts 2.5 hours, but it is also possible to upgrade the tour to a longer 5 hour safari for an additional supplement.

The afternoon is free for you to relax and enjoy the arctic setting. However, if you wish to venture out on another dog-sledding adventure, there is also an afternoon tour which can be added to the package for an additional charge.

In the evening, enjoy a 2-course dinner and later, you have the chance to use the sauna and outside jacuzzi, keeping a look out for the aurora while having a soak. Please note, we recommend pre-booking your preferred time slot, either for a morning refresher, a midday break or an evening relaxing.

Dog Sled Tour with Holmen Husky (2.5 hours)

Enjoy a husky sledding adventure. At the start of the tour you'll be given warm outer clothing and boots, and then you'll meet your guides and dog team. After a full briefing on how to handle the sled, it's time to head out for a ride! Usually two guests share a sled, one driving while the other sits on the sled (with a switch at the halfway point), but if you prefer simply to be a passenger, it can of course be arranged. You will be taken out onto the tracks where race dogs become athletes; along the Alta River and the path where Europe’s best mushers race towards the finish line for the famous Finnmarksløpet.

At Holmen they prioritise intimacy and authenticity by limiting the group size to a maximum of 8 guests. This ensures that each participant receives personalised attention and opportunities to engage with the experienced guides. You don’t get much closer to Norway’s dog-sledding culture than this!

Please note, the tour has departure times at 09.30, 11.00, 14.30 and 16.00.
