Fogo Island Inn

Short Break at Fogo Island Inn  Canada

Many island communities of the Atlantic Ocean remain resilient despite the dominance of nature and the challenges there are to sustain a living in such remote outposts. Fogo Island in Newfoundland is no exception. In 2012, entrepreneur and native islander Zita Cobb returned to Fogo to inject life into a struggling economy. Her project embraced local arts, crafts, and traditional skills, boosted micro businesses and established new ones. The impressive and architecturally stunning Fogo Island Inn is now perhaps the focal point of the island - a luxury retreat belonging entirely to the community itself. It is in this very special location you’ll find yourself a world away from sameness and immersed into wild nature and welcomed by a community ready to share their corner of paradise. This short break can be adapted as part of a longer self-drive holiday in Newfoundland and can be tailored to suit your requirements.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

DAY 1:

Arrival to Gander Airport. It is likely that tonight will be spent in a local hotel in Gander to allow for travel times to Fogo Island the following day. Collect your rental car. There is also air access to Fogo Island by means of charter flight.

DAY 2:

This morning begins with an 85 km (50 mile) drive from Gander to the ferry terminal in Farewell on Newfoundland's main island. After a 45 minute ferry ride a short 27km drive leads you to the inn. Your holiday at Fogo Island Inn will continue at the pace you set. Your suite overlooks the turbulent Atlantic Ocean where floor to ceiling windows provide an uninterrupted wide angle view on nature's show. Watch the sun go down over the horizon or hunker down in the cosy suite to witness a passing storm or iceberg. The natural wood floors and pared down design create a calming and relaxed atmosphere conducive to clearing the head and refreshing the body.

When it’s time for dinner, make your way to the restaurant with a view of the ocean as far as the eye can see. Chef Murray’s culinary ethos is one of respect for Fogo Island’s bounty. Everything coming out of the Inn’s kitchen is home made: caribou sausages, pickled quail eggs, grainy mustards, and berry-jewelled breakfast scones.

After dinner, relax and do nothing. Or relax and enjoy the hotel’s many facilities which include library, cinema, sauna, contemporary art gallery, hot tubs and gym.

Staying at: Fogo Island Inn

DAY 3:

At daybreak, a breakfast of local ingredients awaits you. We suggest that now would be a good time to make use of a local community host who will orientate you to Fogo Island and its rich source of local stories and talented skills people. The island has over 200km of easy-going hiking and walking trails which you can explore independently. Enjoy numerous lookout points where it is not uncommon to spot caribou, foxes, whales, icebergs and colonies of seabirds. If you'd prefer to take to the water, rowing punts are available for use.

Activities change with the seasons. With Autumn comes berry foraging, bonfire nights, star-gazing and epic gales. During the winter months, enjoy a snowmobiling adventure and whiz across the frozen ponds of the Island’s interior. Skate across the long-frozen ponds, snowshoe across the barrens, and maybe even try your hand at ice fishing for trout.

The community hosts will be on hand to help tailor your stay to your preferences. All meals are included.

DAY 4:

After a leisurely breakfast, it is time to bid a fond farewell to Fogo Island and its residents. Not ready to leave? We can arrange extra nights to extend your stay. We recommend allowing a night or two at either end in case of adverse weather conditions which restrict access to the island. Our team are on hand to customise your holiday.
