Northern Lights Cabin Holiday at Nuorgam Resort

Above the treeline at the tip of Finnish Lapland, deepest winter brings a spectacular show of colour. When the sun hovers below the horizon, the vast white landscapes change from intense orange to purple to blue. And when the magnetic fields engage, a downpouring of Northern Lights is a regular sight. A small Sami holiday village near to the border with Norway witnesses this feast of colour and light. Here you'll find a collection of cosy cabins in a village called Nuorgam run by a local family. Overlooking the banks of the Teno River, the village is a short distance from the shores of the Arctic Ocean and placed in the heart of Sami country. Sheltered by the magnificent rolling fells, the stable weather conditions lend themselves well to viewing the Aurora Borealis. This short break in remote Finnish Lapland will bring you close to local reindeer herders and adoring husky dogs and far away from crowds.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

DAY 1:

Arrival at Kirkenes airport and meet your hosts as you transfer to Nuorgam. Settle into your apartment cabin and enjoy a home-cooked dinner before your first chance to witness the magical displays of Aurora.

After dinner you’ll join your guide for a Northern Lights photography workshop, where you’ll learn about the elusive Aurora and how to use your camera to take amazing Aurora shots. Afterwards you’ll head out with your guide to see if you can catch your first view of the cosmic rays!

Please note: Your hosts at the holiday village will advise how your itinerary will work based on current weather conditions. If the forecast is poor on the first night, your Aurora activity will be moved to an alternative evening.

Staying at: Nuorgam Holiday Village

DAY 2:

After breakfast your hosts will introduce you to their excellent selection of snow equipment including toboggans, kick sleds, snow shoes and cross country skis. All of the equipment will be at your perusal throughout your stay and there's always someone on hand to give you some instruction should you need it.

After a morning outdoors you’ll enjoy lunch at the restaurant before transferring to a local Sami reindeer herder’s home. Your host will welcome you and you will meet his reindeer. As you help him feed his reindeer, you’ll learn about the indigenous culture in the past and present. You’ll enjoy hot drinks and snacks around the open fire in his lavvo tent.

After dinner another chance to catch the Northern Lights dancing across the Arctic skies.

DAY 3:

After breakfast you’ll enjoy a further insight to local life as you’ll hop on a snowmobile-drawn sleigh and join your wilderness guide in the surrounding fells. Take in the breathtaking Arctic white wilderness as you travel towards a secluded spot on a frozen lake Pulmankijärvi, in the borderland of Finland and Norway. You’ll enjoy a wilderness lunch in a traditional Lappish kota (reindeer herder’s teepee) before trying your hand at ice fishing on the lake. You’ll help your guide drill a hole in the ice before trying to catch some fish. If you’re lucky, you may catch arctic trout or grayling for supper!

In the evening after dinner perhaps enjoy a session in the warming sauna before joining a Northern Lights excursion by snow shoe.

DAY 4:

After breakfast you’ll head across the border to meet a pack of bouncy huskies at a Norwegian husky farm. The huskies will be eager to show you more of the snow-clad surroundings! The excursion will take you to the Teno River Valley, defined by the surrounding fells. After a while you’ll make a stop and enjoy hot drinks and snacks whilst having a chance to chat with your guide and socialise with the beautiful huskies. Lunch and dinner at the holiday village.

Optional: Northern Lights snow mobile excursion (supplement applies).

DAY 5:

After breakfast head back to Kirkenes airport as you’ll begin your journey home. Or perhaps extend your stay with an extra night at Kirkenes Snow Hotel.
