Nuorgam Resort

Northern Lights Cabin Holiday at Nuorgam Resort

Above the treeline at the tip of Finnish Lapland, deepest winter brings a spectacular show of colour. When the sun hovers below the horizon, the vast white landscapes change from intense orange to purple to blue. And when the magnetic fields engage, a downpour of Northern Lights is a regular sight. A small Sami holiday village near to the border with Norway witnesses this feast of colour and light. Here you'll find a collection of cosy cabins in a village called Nuorgam run by a local family. Overlooking the banks of the Teno River, the village is a short distance from the shores of the Arctic Ocean and placed in the heart of Sami country. Sheltered by the magnificent rolling fells, the stable weather conditions lend themselves well to viewing the Aurora Borealis. This short break in remote Finnish Lapland will bring you close to local reindeer herders and adoring husky dogs and far away from light pollution.

DAY 1:

Arrival at Kirkenes airport and meet your hosts as you transfer to Nuorgam. Settle into your Superior River view cabin, where you can relax in your lounge area and admire the night sky through large picture windows. Enjoy a home-cooked dinner in the restaurant before your first chance to witness the magical displays of Aurora.

After dinner you’ll join your guide for a Snowshoe Northern Lights adventure. Strap on your snowshoes and head out into the surrounding forests, away from any light pollution for the best possible view. Hear stories about the elusive Aurora and how to use your camera to take amazing pictures.

Please note: Your hosts at the holiday village will advise how your itinerary will work based on current weather conditions. If the forecast is poor on the first night, your Aurora activity will be moved to an alternative evening.

Staying at: Nuorgam Holiday Village

DAY 2:

After breakfast your have a morning at leisure. If you wish your hosts will introduce you to their excellent selection of snow equipment including toboggans, kick sleds, snow shoes and cross country skis. (Available at an extra charge)

After a morning outdoors you’ll enjoy lunch at the restaurant before transferring to a local Sami reindeer farm. Your host and his reindeer will welcome you. As you help him feed his friendly herd, you’ll learn about the indigenous culture in the past and present, plus have the chance to try and lasso a reindeer. You’ll enjoy hot drinks and snacks around the open fire in his lavvo tent.

After dinner another chance to catch the Northern Lights dancing across the Arctic skies.

DAY 3:

Start today with a hearty breakfast before the adventure that lies ahead, a snowmobile safari to the Nuorgam fells. Two persons share a snowmobile, taking it in turns to drive, as you make your way to the top of the fell, where the snow covered nature is laid out before you. On a calm day the silence is deafening. Enjoy some hot drinks before returning.

In the evening after dinner perhaps enjoy some time in your private sauna before jumping into the snow, very refreshing.

DAY 4:

Today you’ll head across the border to meet a pack of bouncy huskies at a Norwegian husky farm. The huskies will be eager to show you more of the snow-clad surroundings! Driving your own sled you will head to the Teno River Valley, defined by the surrounding fells. After a while you’ll make a stop and enjoy hot drinks and snacks whilst having a chance to chat with your guide and socialise with the beautiful huskies. Lunch and dinner at the resort.

Optional: Evening Northern Lights snow mobile excursion (supplement applies).

DAY 5:

Spend your final full day in the North of Finland on the seas of the Arctic ocean as you join a thrilling King Crab safari. You make the transfer to the picturesque Norwegian village of Nesseby, where your captain awaits to take you out onto the fjords where these giant crustaceans live on the sea bed. You may also catch other sea creatures of the area including cod, haddock and halibut. Your captain and his crew will prepare a tasty appetizer from the catch of the day, it doesn’t get much fresher than that.

If the skies are kind, the Northern lights will make a farewell appearance overhead this evening.

DAY 6:

After breakfast head back to Kirkenes airport as you’ll begin your journey home. Or perhaps extend your stay with an extra night at Kirkenes Snow Hotel.
