Port surcharges, permits, and landing fees are covered, and Wi-Fi is included; however, connections may be unreliable in remote regions.
After arriving in Reykjavik, you will be met by a representative of AE Expeditions and transferred to the group hotel. If you arrive before 4 pm, you can visit the AE Expeditions hospitality area at the hotel to leave your luggage and enjoy refreshments.
While there, you can collect your cabin luggage tags and speak with the ground operations team, who may have updates on pre-embarkation or useful information on dining options, cash withdrawals, or any last-minute essentials from a local pharmacy or supermarket.
The rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish. All meals today are at your own expense.

Today, you will follow the route of one of Reykjavik’s most renowned geological attractions—the Golden Circle. Your journey begins at Thingvellir National Park, the historic site of Iceland’s first parliament. It is also where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet, creating an open fissure in the landscape.
Next, you will visit Gullfoss, where water plunges 34 metres into the Hvítá River, offering an incredible photographic opportunity. From there, you will explore the geothermal fields and geysers that make Iceland famous. The bubbling hot springs and steaming vents are a striking reminder of the immense power beneath your feet.
By late afternoon, you will return to Reykjavik to board the Sylvia Earle. After settling into your cabin, attend important safety briefings before the ship departs for your Greenland adventure. This evening, meet your expedition team and crew at the Welcome Dinner.

The approach to Jan Mayen is a striking sight, dominated by the towering 2,277-metre (7,470-foot) Beerenberg volcano—the northernmost active volcano in the world, last erupting in 1985. The northern part of the island is a prime location for spotting whales and dolphins, with impressive glaciers, some extending to the sea.
If conditions allow, you will attempt a landing at Kvalrossbukta, a relatively sheltered bay on the island’s west coast. This site is one of the access points for supplying the Olonkinbyen weather station, located on the island’s eastern side.

While polar bears haven’t been spotted here since 2004, the island’s history remains tied to these Arctic predators through Willem Barentsz’s 1596 expedition. Positioned where the Norwegian and Barents Seas meet, Bear Island features northern plains dotted with freshwater lakes and dramatic cliffs along the southern coast.
