Staying at: Malangen Resort

DAY 2:

After breakfast, embark on your first activity - ‘Dog Sledding Through the White Silence’. Meet the guide and get dressed in warm winter clothing, then walk the short distance to the kennels and meet the huskies, eagerly waiting to take you into the wilderness. The adventure starts with a lesson on how to drive your own husky team, driving in pairs (one a driver and one as passenger) with a chance to swap on route. The experience is magical, dogs yapping with excitement as they run on trails through the snow covered forest, ending back at the camp with a light snack and hot drinks by an open fire.

Each activity includes a light snack, but you may wish to have an optional lunch in the hotel restaurant available between 12.00 and 16.00 hours.

The afternoon is free for a well-deserved rest after the morning exertions. Later, enjoy the evening meal in the restaurant before preparing to venture outside in search of the aurora on a Northern Lights watch from the resort’s Camp Nikka, situated a 20 minute walk away. Beforehand, at the hotel, the guide will give a briefing about this natural phenomenon and the current conditions before you set off to the basecamp. Camp Nikka is situated in a location with little light pollution, enhancing the chances of seeing the light show. The tour does not include chasing the lights by vehicle, but instead the basecamp experience allows guests to use the wooden lavvu and facilities, sit around the open fire listening to stories and enjoying a light snack and hot drinks. The guide will be on hand to give instructions on how to photograph the northern lights.

DAY 3:

power for human power as you head out through the snowy forests using cross-country skis, a much loved form of transportation for the Norwegian people and a fun way to explore. After learning the basic technique, prepare yourself to slide and even fall into the soft snow, using the prepared tracks to navigate around the sparkling wilderness. A break is taken during the trip for hot drinks and a snack.

After a relaxing afternoon and early evening dinner, head out once again using snowshoes, a great way to literally ‘walk on snow’ and into the forests above the resort seeking clear skies in search of the aurora. With head-torches showing the way, you'll head for open areas that are ideal for observing and photographing the northern lights. The guide will be on hand to give advice if required and tell stories about this natural phenomenon. A stop is made along the way to make a bonfire to warm up and enjoy hot drinks and snacks.

DAY 4:

Today you'll join a Sami specialist in a lavvu tent, learning about the history, culture and the way of life of Northern Europe’s indigenous people. You will see traditional artefacts and taste authentic Sami food cooked on an open fire. Then you'll enjoy a chance to feed the reindeer grazing nearby, whilst learning about the traditions of reindeer herding and the art of lasso throwing. Afterwards, the guide will assist you to make your own handicraft from reindeer antler, a souvenir of this memorable experience.

The remainder of the day is free to relax - perhaps walk to the husky kennels nearby to say farewell to the amazing dogs; warm up in the communal sauna available early in the morning or book a private 2 hour session, or even a private jacuzzi and sauna experience, all at an additional charge.

After dinner, head outside for your last chance in search of the dancing northern lights.

DAY 5:

There are two regular transfer times taking you back to Tromso airport or city centre for your onward journey. It is also possible to book a flexible transfer time at an additional charge.

Northern Lights and Activity Break at Malangen Resort

5/5

My husband and I had the most incredible honeymoon thanks to Magnetic North Travel. We worked with Matthew and he helped us navigate through their many amazing location options until we found the one perfect for what we wanted. He then was so accommodating as we worked and re-worked our itinerary! He was so quick to reply and even jumped on the phone twice with us to talk us through option and details so he could customize a package specifically for us. Magnetic North Travelwas a pleasure to work with and we would recommend them to anyone looking for a seamless and easy way to enjoy an arctic adventure.

My wife, daughter and I took the package tour with Magnetic North. The trip was well organised. Before the trip Matthew was very responsive in answering all the questions that we had. The travelling arrangements from Gatwick to Malangen and back were convenient and smooth. We were met by a very courteous and helpful staff at the Tromse airport. Her name was Elke. As part of the package we were accommodated in wooden cabins which were charming. However our cabin was cold because not all heaters were working. The capacity of the water heater was also insufficient for the completion of a hair wash and a full shower. My wife had to complete the shower with cold water while the outside temperature was sub-zero. The bedrooms were also not properly cleaned. There was even chewing gum stuck to an armchair. We had to upgrade our accommodation to the modern rooms in the main building of the resort. The two rooms we had were cosy and comfortable and offered a great view of the fjord and the night sky. For that we had to pay extra. The recommendation of the Malangen resort for watching the northern lights was excellent. We were able to watch the northern lights even from within our hotel bedroom. We were also very fortunate that the lights appeared for two out of the three nights that we stayed. Staying in the main building was a pleasure. The service staff were helpful and courteous. We were very satisfied with the dining room and the meals. The wifi strength was however below par. We did not get good reception anywhere, in our rooms or in the common areas. I'm giving it a star rating of four instead of five only because of the unsatisfactory condition of the cabin to which we were assigned upon arrival. We did not take part in other snow activities at Malangen because we had done that elsewhere before and because watching the northern lights was the only purpose of the trip. As far as watching the lights is concerned, we are completely happy.
