Island Retreat

Holiday at Little Island Lighthouse

Inhabit your very own private island north of the Arctic Circle in Norway. This short break at a lighthouse turned retreat overlooks the wild Atlantic sea of the Vesteralan and Lofoten Islands arcipelago. The lighthouse has just two guest rooms and is a perfect spot to enjoy lost hours taking in the view of the Lofoten Islands in the distance, or perhaps the Northern Lights after dark. In summer enjoy walks over the rocky landscape which tells stories of past inhabitants as far back as the Stone Age. The summer months also bring round the clock daylight and the magical midnight sun.

DAY 1:

Arrival to Evenes Airport.

Collect car rental and drive to the harbour village of Bø, a scenic journey of around three hours. Enjoy the first spectacular views of the Vesteralan Islands.

You’ll arrive to your guesthouse accommodation in time for a home cooked dinner and orientation from your host. In winter, accommodation may be in a different location closer to Sortland.

Staying at: Skagakaia Guesthouse

DAY 2:

After a leisurely breakfast, it will be time to make the short sea crossing to your island by RiB (rapid inflatable boat). The journey is just 15 minutes and takes you directly to the jetty from where there are steps leading you to the lighthouse itself.

Settle into your room at Little Island Lighthouse (Litløy Fyr in Norwegian). From this moment on, lose yourself to island life. Enjoy the ever changing views and weather. Watch waves crash against the shore and try to spot the Northern Lights after dark in the Autumn and Winter months.

All meals are included and are home cooked using seasonal and local produce wherever possible. Your hostess Elena will ensure that you have a comfortable stay.

DAY 3:

Relax and enjoy your little island retreat. Enjoy walks over the rocks uncovering the island’s long history. Until the Second World War, the island was home to as many as 890 residents and it’s possible to view the remains of some of the old houses. The island has since become deserted - apart from yourselves, of course!

Other transitory inhabitants of the island include migrating birdlife. Among the birds that can be seen include puffins, shags, white tailed eagles and gannets. Meanwhile out at sea it's sometimes possible to spot humpback whales and orca feeding for herring off the coast of the islands.

Sea kayaks are available to rent for guests with experience.

DAY 4:

After breakfast, it’ll be time to return to the mainland where we recommend staying for your final night at Skagakaia Guesthouse. If time, enjoy some hiking or hire a bike to explore some of the local area.

DAY 5:

Today return to the airport to return your car rental. Alternatively why not extend your holiday with a stay in the Lofoten Islands to the south of the archipelago? Our team will be happy to suggest ideas for your tailor-made holiday.
