Aurora on ice

Lake Inari Aurora short break

Tucked away between Narnia-like winter forests and Lapland’s largest frozen lake lies stunning Inari Wilderness Hotel. On land, cosy log cabin accommodation and cultural encounters with local Sami Herders await. On ice, an unforgettable Aurora Hunt and snowmobiling session add awe and thrill to this balanced wilderness short break.

Day 1

Welcome to the Arctic North of Finland, where dark skies, deep snow, and tranquil nature offer a stunning backdrop for the Aurora Borealis. With over 200 sightings a year seeing Northern Lights can be as simple as stepping out of the front door of your cabin. Spend the next 3 nights at the fabulous Inari Wilderness resort.

Day 2

Start your day with a hearty breakfast, before it is time to head outdoors to play in the snowbound wilderness. Spend the morning travelling across frozen lakes and over forest trails on a thrilling snowmobile tryout. Your guide will provide you with full instructions on how to drive this modern means of winter transport. This afternoon you’ll meet the traditional workhorse of the Arctic, the reindeer, on a visit to a local reindeer farm. Get up close to these gentle creatures and learn about the life of a reindeer herder. As darkness settles in a walk through the old-growth forests on a gentle snowshoe hike to an Aurora Camp. Warm yourself by the open fire, enjoy some hot drinks and watch for the northern lights across the star filled sky, don’t forget your camera.

Day 3

Make new friends as you head out on a husky safari. These excitable dogs love to run but they love all of the fuss afterwards, just as much. There is something truly special about sliding through the dramatic scenery in tranquil silence, save for the padding of small feet on the snow. There will also be an opportunity to visit the Sami museum Siida, where you can learn about the Sami culture and their history as nomadic herders. End the day at a faster pace as you head out once more in search of the northern lights, this time sat snug in a sled pulled by a snowmobile. When you reach the camp your guide will get the fire going, while you watch for the star attraction to reveal itself once more.

Day 4

As the sun slowly rises on the horizon for a few hours of daylight, it is time to say goodbye to your wilderness home and all of the adventures that you have experienced. This doesn’t have to be the end of the road, let one of our arctic specialists create your perfect trip with even more nights in the land of the aurora.
