WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

Day 1 Winnipeg

Sat in the heart of Canada, Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba and well worth exploring. From trendy neighbourhoods with the latest pop up restaurants to the open air trails and woodlands of Assiniboine park. Pay a visit to the Canadian museum of human rights or cross the Esplanade Riel, one of the most recognisable sites in the city, from downtown to the french quarter.

Day 2 Winnipeg to Churchill

Leaving Winnipeg behind, take the short 2 hour flight up to Churchill, where you will be met by your guide. Welcome to your genuine log cabin hotel in the wilderness, Lazy Bear Lodge. There’s no time to sit around and get comfortable as you hit the ground running, heading out on a Cultural and Heritage Tour of the Churchill area, including historic Cape Merry and an outside tour of the Polar Bear Jail (approx. 2-3 hours), learn what makes this town tick and the background to the days ahead. As the evening draws in and the sky darkens prepare to meet some of the fluffiest, most welcoming locals, not the polar bears but husky dogs, it’s time to go dog mushing. Climb onboard the summer cart and hold on tight as these dogs love to run and they love a cuddle afterwards just as much. Meet a real life dog musher and hear stories of their adventures and how they look after their pack of dogs. If conditions are right and the skies are clear, keep an eye out for those fascinating lights of the night sky, the Northern Lights. (Meals: breakfast, lunch & dinner)

Day 3 Helicopter flight

Up, up and away as you fly across the stunning coastline of the Hudson bay and multi coloured lands of the tundra on a magnificent 1.5 hr helicopter flight. Look out for the wildlife below, including polar bears, beluga whales, moose, Caribou, red and arctic fox and so much more. This ride is a thrill a minute. There is also the opportunity to join the Parks Canada interpretive presentation, where you will hear how the Churchill Wildlife Management area is run to the benefit of the animals. (Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner)

Day 4 Explore the coast and countryside

The experiences keep on coming and it’s a busy day ahead. Set out onto the Hudson Bay river in a specially designed boat that allows you to get up close and personal to the other visitors to the area, vast pods of beluga whales. These gentle and curious creatures swim these waters throughout the summer and into the early autumn months, as many as 60,000 whales come into the Hudson bay area during the peak summer months. Returning to shore your guides will take you on a Boreal forest walking tour, where you can see the fall colours in all of their splendour, right at your feet. Round up the day by hopping aboard an oversized Tundra buggy and head off into the Churchill wildlife management area, where you may just see the odd polar bear or two, lazing in the sun, hunting for food or taking a quick dip in the cool waters of the bay. Remember, every night there is always the chance that you will see the spectacular Northern lights as they dance across the sky. (Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner)

Day 5 Churchill to Winnipeg

Your last day in this sub arctic region starts with a visit to the Churchill Northern studies centre, who will provide a guided interpretive hike to the rocket range, a former rocket launch site used by Canada and the United States, whilst also explaining about their work in the region. Alas the time has come to leave the ‘Polar bear capital of the world’ behind and return to Winnipeg. You will be transported to the airport to catch your flight south, before spending the night once more in the heart of Manitoba. (Meals: Breakfast and lunch)

Day 6 Winnipeg and onwards

After a good nights rest it is time to reflect on your amazing experiences in the north and everything that you had the pleasure to see, before your onward journey home or to the next part of your Canada adventure. Is it time to head to Quebec, the only walled city in North America, to Ottawa, the nations capital, or to the cosmopolitan heights of Toronto.
