From June through August, explore the Discovery Passage and its surrounding islands, a region home to some of the world’s most spectacular wildlife. Your expert guide will lead the search for Dall’s porpoises, Pacific white-sided dolphins, sea lions, bald eagles, and black bears, all thriving in this rich coastal ecosystem.
As summer transitions into late August and September, grizzly bears take centre stage. During this season, you’ll travel by high-speed covered boat into the Orford River Valley, where the Homalco First Nation will welcome you onto their traditional territory. From raised viewing platforms, you’ll have an unobstructed view of grizzly bears as they roam the riverbanks, feasting on the annual salmon run—a truly unforgettable wildlife encounter.
Midway through your journey, the focus shifts from land to sea as you head north to Wildcoast Orca Camp in Johnstone Strait. Nestled near the Michael Biggs Robson Bight Ecological Reserve—famous for its orca rubbing beaches—this remote wilderness camp is the perfect base for exploring killer whale habitat by kayak. With more than 500 orcas travelling through these waters, sightings are common, and in recent years, humpback whales have made a remarkable comeback in the area. Whether paddling through the strait or watching from the rocky shoreline, you’ll have incredible opportunities to witness these majestic marine mammals in their natural environment.
