Viking Trail

Hidden in the mountains of southern Norway lies the Setesdal Valley. This lush Nordic paradise was carved by receding glaciers during the last ice age. It runs from the Hardanger mountains in the North carrying the river Otra all the way to the sea near Kristiansand, passing through many large lakes along the way. This trip combines mountain hiking, wilderness camping and calm water canoeing offering a rewarding, and at times, challenging adventure.

Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival to Kristiansand Airport. Transfer by bus to Evje. Overnight in Lavvo tents on camping ground site. Group briefing and equipment check.

DAY 2

After breakfast, transfer to the start of the hiking trail in the Setesdal mountains. Spend the afternoon walking up to heights of 4000 ft along marked trails. At the end of the day you'll set up camp above the treeline near to streams and lakes. Guests will carry their own food supplies and equipment.

DAY 3

Today you'll leave all civilisation behind and walk into the pristine wilderness of the Setesdal mountains under the leadership of your guide. Overnight at the next camp location.

DAY 4

Start of the canoe phase of the trip learning basic paddling techniques along the quiet River Otra. Overnight in cabin accommodation with hot showers.

DAY 5

Canoe along the river which eventually gives way to the Byglandsfjord. Paddle on the calm waters of this inland fjord surrounded by steep mountains and forests. Bushcraft activity and overnight in improvised shelters.

DAY 6

This morning you'll continue to your end point in the canoes; a total distance travelled of 60km on the water. You will be transferred back to Evjemoen for your final afternoon and evening rest. A barbeque evening meal will be provided.

DAY 7

Transfer to the airport and return.
