What to expect from a Canadian cabin holiday

The log cabin has become a universal symbol of escape from fast-paced lives, technology and urbanism. The combination of adventure and simplicity is a luxury that the modern world ignores and so the log cabin beckons to many travellers. And where better than Canada’s great wilderness? Across the vast territories, micro-resorts offer guests access to nature, wildlife and, of course, simplicity. But here at Magnetic North Travel, we’d like to complicate matters and give you our low down on four Canadian cabin types which offer something a little different, and something very special for your next escape.

The “wildlife welcome” cabin

Witness bears, moose or the elusive wolf from the comfort of your wildlife cabin. More often than not, these cabins were founded by wildlife enthusiasts looking for a way of sharing their knowledge and passion. Many cabins specialise in bear viewing, others on whale watching, there are a few however that combine both for the ultimate wildlife viewing experience.

If you’d like to follow the footsteps of a grizzly bear or kayak with the whales we recommend to visit the following cabins either during spring or summer.

Beware of the polar bear! Join a summer trip to Churchill, Canada’s polar bear capital, where you’ll venture out into the Canadian tundra and Hudson Bay to walk with polar bears and paddle along Beluga whales.

At Farewell Lodge whales swim in pristine waters and bears roam the shortline within close vicinity of the lodge. You might be lucky and spot one of them from your window!

The escapist’s cabin

Though remoteness comes with the territory, there are a few Canadian cabins which take off the grid to the next level. Located in places only to be reached by plane or boat, they welcome those keen to escape into the wild heart of Canada. Despite their remoteness, these cabins score high in terms of luxury (read hot tub, sauna and spa) and are the perfect destination for an anniversary, honeymoon or simply a break for two.

Experience the best of Canadian cabin life at Bear Claw Lodge in British Columbia. The eco-lodge adding a ‘wow’ to food, accommodation, spa and outdoor activities is the perfect getaway for those craving a romantic getaway.

The activity hub

The activity hub is the perfect landing spot for those who cannot help but treat the outdoors as one big playground. There’s snow to be shredded, mountains to be scrambled and canoes to be steered into the unknown. For them, the cabin is a place to recount the adventures of the day with a cold brew by the fire. Since each season comes with its very own set of activities, the activity hub cabin never fails to throw a new activity into the mix!

Travel to the Great White North for action-packed days including dog mushing, snowshoeing and ice fishing or perhaps experience autumn spending your days hiking, kayaking, canoeing or Aurora Chasing.

The cultural experience

In Canada’s indigenous community nature and culture are closely intertwined. Staying in a cabin collaborating with, or run by, the indigenous community is a unique opportunity to learn about ways in which the people maintain their close relationship to nature and wildlife. This immersive experience will teach travelers about the history, legends and mythical side of Canada’s nature.
