Sleeping Among the Pines: A Winter Escape to Sweden’s Treehotel

In November of 2025 I was lucky enough to be sent to Swedish Lapland to gain a better understanding of this destination and exactly what it can offer our clients. If I was at all unsure on whether to go (I wasn’t), on seeing the TreeHotel on the itinerary, my mind was made up. With a keen interest in innovative design, I had spotted this property in many interior design magazines over the years and the chance to experience it for myself wasn’t to be missed. Inside the Rooms at the TreeHotel

On arrival at the TreeHotel you will be met by the Guesthouse, which has accommodations for those feeling not as adventurous or those wanting to keep both feet on the ground. This is also where all meals take place and activities depart from, making for a luxury winter escape. To reach the rooms, there is a 10-15 minute illuminated walk through the snow covered forest, which I thought all added to the magic. This was certainly the coldest I had been on this trip, with hair and eyelashes freezing over. Reaching my home for the night was most welcome. 

Inside The Dragonfly – My Home for the Evening 

The Dragonfly is one of the first rooms you will come across, accessed by a ramp from the forest floor. With our bags delivered straight to the room, it’s also one of the most easily accessible cabins on the property. Once through the door, the main living space feels much larger than it appears from the ground. This is a spacious two-bedroom cabin complete with a full bathroom and a dedicated seating area.

The first room you come to is the bathroom. Featuring a modern, eco-friendly incineration toilet and a shower with enough hot water for a comfortable 15–20 minutes. There is absolutely no sense of “camping” here. Despite the way below freezing temperatures outside, the cabin was wonderfully warm and welcoming. 

I was lucky enough to sleep in the master bedroom, which overlooks the Luleå River. Waking up in a plush double bed to a spectacular winter sunrise through the enormous window was an absolute highlight of my trip. This cabin has a second bedroom on the opposite side of the cabin and a large lounge and dining space. Mirrorcube – The Illusion of the Forest

Next on the forest path is perhaps the most famous structure on the property: The Mirrorcube. It’s a perfect 4 x 4 x 4 metre cube suspended around a single tree trunk, with exterior walls made entirely of mirrored glass.

Because it reflects the surrounding pine trees and the moody winter sky, it’s highly camouflaged. Practically invisible until you are standing right next to it and your eyes adjust. This room is accessed by a new installed structural set of stairs. 

Inside, the vibe changes entirely. It features a cosy, minimalist Scandinavian interior with light plywood walls. Designed strictly for two people, it has a double bed, a small seating area, and a toilet. While the windows are seamlessly hidden from the outside, from the inside they offer panoramic views of the forest. There is even a hidden rooftop terrace accessed by a step ladder, offering a private perch right in the canopy. Mirrorcube is a truly unique experience for a bespoke holiday in Sweden.

The Biosphere – Luxury for Guests and Wildlife (H3)

If you are looking for the absolute cutting edge of sustainable luxury, The Biosphere is a showstopper. Designed by the famous Bjarke Ingels Group, this room was created to directly support the local ecosystem. The entire exterior is a dark, glazed cube wrapped in a spherical swarm of 350 individual bird nesting boxes.

Walking across the suspended bridge to enter the room, you instantly feel like you are stepping into a living habitat. Inside, the design flips to dark, rich organic materials and ultra-sleek minimalism, which naturally draws your eyes outward to focus entirely on the forest view.

Unlike some of the smaller, more historic rooms, The Biosphere doesn’t compromise on interior space. It features a split-level layout with a plush double bed, a light-flooded living space, and a bathroom with toilet and eco shower. The ultimate highlight? It features its own private in-room sauna and a rooftop terrace that gives you a 360-degree view above the treetops, making it an absolute dream for a luxury winter escape.

The 7th Room – The Pinnacle of Arctic Luxury 

If you are looking for the absolute height of luxury at the TreeHotel, The 7th Room is it. Towering ten metres above the forest floor on twelve sleek black columns, it is the largest and highest suite on the property. Looking up from below, the entire base of the cabin is covered in a life-sized photograph of the treetops before they were built over. This creates a brilliant optical illusion that makes the structure nearly vanish into the sky.

You enter via a staircase, and stepping inside feels like entering a premium Nordic villa. The interior is striking, featuring dark charred-wood walls, light ash floors, and huge panoramic windows that look out toward the Luleå River.

Designed to accommodate up to five guests, it has two spacious bedrooms, a luxurious lounge with a pellet stove, and bathroom. The true masterpiece of The 7th Room is the outdoor terrace. It features a net floor stretched between the rooms, meaning you can lie suspended above the forest floor. Look straight down through the ropes, or look up to watch the Northern Lights dance across the Arctic sky.

The Winter Experience: Beyond the Treehouse

Visiting the TreeHotel during the winter months is a completely different experience to any other time of year. The forest is blanketed in a heavy silence, and sub-zero temperatures create a crisp, clear atmosphere that feels removed from the rush of everyday life. 

While the cabins themselves are the main draw, the activities available here are what truly elevate the stay. During the short Arctic days, the landscape is bathed in a soft, ethereal blue twilight – known as the ‘blue hour’. It’s the perfect backdrop for exploring the surrounding wilderness. Whether you choose to go snowshoeing through the deep snowbanks, embark on a thrilling dog-sledding safari, or try your hand at ice fishing on the frozen river.

After an adventure packed day, the ultimate Arctic reward awaits back at the hotel; The Forest Sauna. Relaxing in a traditional Swedish wood-fired sauna, surrounded by snow-dusted pines, is an essential ritual (for an additional charge).

Of course, the pinnacle of any winter stay here is the chance to witness the Northern Lights. Because the TreeHotel is situated far away from artificial light pollution, you have a prime vantage point. Whether you are viewing them from the suspended net of 7th Room or looking through the floor to ceiling windows of Dragonfly, seeing the Aurora Borealis dance across the sky is a moment you will never forget.
