ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Departures: This is a set 4-night tour with flexible arrivals in July and August.

ITINERARY

From Oslo bus station, take the NW161 (Valdresekspressen) to Bygdin, at the foot of the Jotunheimen mountain range (journey time approximately 4 hours 15 minutes). There are direct buses or some with a transfer at Fagernes depending on the day and time. Check-in to the accommodation at Bygdin Mountain Hotel, and if there’s time you can embark on your first hike to stretch your legs after the transfer. The hike takes you to Bygdin Lake with beautiful views and covers 6 km on a flat gravel road - easing you into the active days ahead.

Bygdin Mountain Hotel

This atmospheric mountain hotel has been welcoming guests for many years. Rooms are comfortable with a private bathroom and the hotel's restaurant serves breakfast and dinner. Lunch packs can be made from the breakfast table, which is very typical with hotels catering for hikers in Norway.

Enjoy a hearty breakfast to get you ready for today's hike. From the breakfast table you pack your own lunch items and fill your flasks with hot drinks. Today’s hike takes you to Synshorn Mountain, located at 1,475 metres above sea level and offers fantastic views over Jotunheimen. The moderate hike is approximately 2.8 kilometres in one direction with an elevation gain of 450 metres, taking around 90 minutes each way. There are good paths, well-marked but as you ascend the path gets a little more rocky. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over the mountains and Lake Bygdin.

In the evening, enjoy a wholesome meal at the hotel, prepared using local ingredients.

From Bygdin you will join a scenic boat cruise on the historical M/B Bitihorn, taking you on a lovely trip across the lake to Eidsbugarden, where you alight and walk the short distance to the accommodation at Fondsbu DNT.

The hike to Torshammeren provides sweeping views without too much effort, as you will follow a gradual ascent on trails to the summit. From the top, you’ll be surrounded by the majestic Jotunheimen peaks, with the beautiful Tyin Lake before you. The trail is easy to follow except for the last kilometre, where small cairns guide you safely to the top. It is possible to vary the hike slightly and visit lakes and rivers, giving you the feeling of being far away from civilization. The hiking distance is approximately 7 kilometres.

Fondsbu DNT Cabin

Fondsbu Cabin is a true mountain hiker's highlight with a cosy and homely atmosphere. Situated at the end of Lake Bygdin, it is a great base to explore the region on good terrain and provides a warm welcome at the end of an active day. Enjoy warming up in front of the fireplace and the homely cooked meals. Accommodation is in bunk rooms with shared bathroom facilities, which are commonly found in traditional hiking accommodation.

After a relaxed breakfast, you’ll hike to Utsikten viewpoint - this is a relatively easy route with spectacular views over the great nature landscape of Jotunheimen. The viewpoint in the north western part of the mountain Skjeneggen is one of the finest in the mountain range, with endless views of the many peaks. The route is around 6 kilometres and an ascent of 410 metres. The shorter daily hikes mean that you have free time to explore the areas around the lodges and spend time relaxing in the peaceful setting.

The mountain adventure ends today by taking the M/B Bitihorn boat cruise back to Bygdin, followed by the return bus transfer to Oslo centre, taking approximately 4 hours, arriving around 18.30.

We recommend spending a night in Oslo to explore Norway’s capital. Please ask our sales team for the different options.

Practical Information:

The accommodation will be based in DNT (Norwegian Trekking Association) Mountain Cabins which are very typical across Norway and offer a basic style of accommodation, some with shared bathroom facilities.

It is important to be prepared and dress appropriately for the mountain conditions. We recommend wearing suitable hiking boots, warm and waterproof clothing.

Your luggage is transported between the different accommodations, so you will only need a daypack to use while hiking.

All meals are provided on the tour. It is common on these trips to make a packed lunch from the breakfast selection.

The walking routes are well signposted, but you will receive maps and gpx files with detailed information.
