Travel to Ålesund by direct flight from London or Copenhagen, connect via Oslo, or arrive by coastal voyage. On arrival, collect your rental car at the airport or downtown. Transfers are also available if you’d like more time in the city before driving.
Check into the centrally located Hotel Brosundet for a two-night stay (parking nearby). Spend the afternoon exploring Ålesund’s waterways and Art Nouveau architecture. For a memorable start, climb the 418 steps to Aksla viewpoint and watch the sun set over the town and islands.
Enjoy your first breakfast in Norway before exploring this island town surrounded by fjords and mountains. Sample excellent coffee, taste fresh seafood, and breathe in the sea air.
Choose how to spend the day: take a wildlife sea safari, join a guided architecture walk, or kayak the peaceful waterways. Further along the coast, the island of Runde offers rich birdlife and coastal scenery.
Begin your road trip into the mountains. Two scenic routes are available, both involving a short ferry crossing (not included). Take your time and enjoy the views along the fjords.
Arrive at Mivo in Stranda for a three-night stay. Your hosts will welcome you to your suite, penthouse, or cabin. Spend the evening relaxing, dine at Mivo’s pre-bookable half-board restaurant, or head to the village for a local meal.
Driving distance: 62–78 km / 90 minutes to 2 hours
Today you can explore the mountains your way. Hike, bike, or kayak with a private guide (3–6 hours) tailored to your pace. Self-guided hiking trails are also available from Mivo or nearby. Afterwards, relax in your private sauna or wood-fired hot tub with mountain views.
We’ve also included a visit to Christian Gaard, a fjord farm dating back to 1550 and only accessible by boat. This trip can be taken today or later in your stay.
Mivo is perfectly placed for iconic day trips.
Geirangerfjord (UNESCO World Heritage Site): Take a ferry cruise past waterfalls such as the Seven Sisters, Bridal Veil, and the Suitor. See abandoned mountain farms perched high above the fjord.
Trollstigen Scenic Route: Drive one of Norway’s most famous mountain roads, with sharp bends and dramatic viewpoints. A visitor centre at the top offers walking paths to panoramic lookouts.
Both trips can also be arranged with a private driver-guide for a tailored experience.
Drive through the Sunnmøre Alps to Øye, a peaceful village at the edge of Norangsfjord. This is the gateway to hikes including Slogen and Smørskredtindane, as well as the mossy Norangsdalen valley.
Stay two nights at the historic Hotel Union Øye, which has hosted emperors and mountaineers since the 1850s.
Driving distance: 51 km / 1 hour
Wake to fresh mountain air and a day of choice. Hike the summit of Slogen, cycle the Norangsdalen valley, kayak the fjord, or snorkel in Lake Lyngstøyl, where flooded farm buildings from 1908 lie preserved underwater.
Hotel Union Øye also arranges daily kayaking and e-biking trips. Private guided tours are available for hiking, cycling, or multi-activity adventures.
Your journey ends today with a drive along Hjørundfjorden before joining the E39 coastal route back to Ålesund for your onward travel.
Driving distance: 111 km / 2 hours 45 minutes
