The Snæfellsnes Peninsula, known as “the peninsula of the snowy mountain,” extends from Iceland’s west coast like a long arm with a clenched fist at its tip, and it is, in many ways, a microcosm of the entire island. A rugged mountain chain runs its length. You will visit the fishing village of Grundarfjörður, a place with an impressive coastline, and mountains, lakes, and waterfalls behind the village. One of the most photographed and famous mountains in Iceland, Kirkjufell, can be seen jutting out into the bay. You will also visit Arnarstapi and Hellnar before experiencing the area from below, inside Vatnshellir cave. You’ll descend 35 meters underground and venture about 200 meters into the lava tube beneath the glacier Snæfellsjökull! On the way back to Borgarnes, your guide will give you practical tips on how to photograph the Auroras as part of the Northern Lights Academy program. Naturally, once darkness falls, you’ll be out in the hotel garden chasing the Northern Lights and soaking in the hotel’s outdoor hot tubs.

Today’s itinerary is dedicated to glaciers, ice, and icebergs. You’ll travel to Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs, where you can explore the incredible surroundings and might even spot seals swimming in the Arctic waters. You can also walk along the black sandy beach, known as Diamond Beach, where large icebergs often wash ashore. In the afternoon, you’ll visit the tiny turf church at Hof and spend time in Europe’s largest national park, home to Iceland’s highest mountains, an alpine environment, and Europe’s largest glacier. In the evening, enjoy a film presentation about the Northern Lights as part of the Northern Lights Academy program. Be sure not to go to bed too early in this remote and peaceful location, or you might miss out on one more chance to see the Northern Lights shimmering and dancing across the night sky.
The optional Ice Cave Tour, available from October to April (weather permitting), offers a mesmerising 2.5-hour adventure through Iceland’s icy landscapes. The journey begins with a scenic 30-minute 4×4 drive from the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, followed by a brief 5-15 minute hike to the cave entrance. Once inside, you’ll be immersed in the surreal beauty of nature’s ice formations, with captivating hues of blue creating a sense of wonder. The crisp air and profound silence enhance the ethereal atmosphere, offering a rare glimpse into the raw power and majesty of Iceland’s icy terrain. Priced at ISK 23,600 per person, the tour requires good hiking boots and warm, waterproof clothing for your comfort and safety. Booking is available on day 2 of the Northern Lights Exploration tour, with a minimum age requirement of 10 years. After the cave exploration, you’ll be escorted back to the hotel, while the rest of the group continues with the official tour program. Although some activities may be missed, a visit to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is included for everyone, ensuring a comprehensive and unforgettable Icelandic adventure.
