Departures: This trip has flexible arrivals and operates between 20th December and end of April. The itinerary is a guide only and can be tailor-made to your exact requirements. There are other activities available and can be added or swapped to those stated on the itinerary. It is also possible to enjoy this trip without an overnight stay at the igloo hotel if you prefer, and room upgrades are also possible.

ITINERARY

On arrival at Alta Airport or the city centre, take your shared transfer to Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel. This extraordinary hotel is rebuilt every winter entirely from ice and snow, with a new design theme each season. After checking in, store your luggage in the locker area and explore the intricate ice sculptures and snow-carved rooms.

In the evening, enjoy a two-course dinner (optional wine package) made from locally sourced ingredients in the Lavvu restaurant. You’ll then be given a short introduction to ‘Sleeping On Ice’ before settling into your igloo room for a once-in-a-lifetime Arctic experience.

The hotel is tucked between the stunning Finnmark Plateau and Norway’s Arctic fjords suiting both adventure seekers and romantic explorers alike. Each winter the Igloo Hotel is carved from ice and snow and includes individually designed suites illuminated beautifully as well as ice rooms. Every year the rooms are designed from scratch with new, surprising themes arising each season. The temperature inside the Igloo Hotel is between -4 and -7 degrees requiring warm clothing when viewing and exploring the fantastic ice sculptures or having a drink at the ice bar. A sauna and shared shower facilities are provided as well as free WiFi and access to the warm restaurants at Arctic Wilderness Lodge nearby.
Start the day with breakfast and an optional warming sauna before heading into the wilderness for a husky sledding adventure. Mush your own team of Alaskan huskies through snow-covered forest trails - a highlight of any winter holiday in Norway. After a light lunch at the Lavvu restaurant, transfer to the Arctic Wilderness Lodge where you’ll spend the next three nights.
 
Your river-view room features a private balcony overlooking the Alta River. In the evening, enjoy a three-course fine dining experience at the Maka restaurant, where chefs prepare seasonal dishes from an open kitchen.

You will transfer the short distance to the husky kennels, where on arrival you'll meet the eager dogs and help get them prepared for the sled ride. After receiving safety and driving instructions, you'll head off in pairs, one the musher and one as a passenger, with chances to swap drivers on route. Follow the trails through the forest and alongside the Alta River, enjoying the arctic landscapes and tranquility of your surroundings as you glide along the snowy tracks. Once back at the kennels, help return the Alaskan huskies to their kennels and relax around the open fire with warm drinks and refreshments.

After a 3 course dinner, meet the Sámi people for an unforgettable evening reindeer safari. Glide through the snow on a sled pulled by reindeer under the starry night sky, keeping watch for the Northern Lights as you learn about Sámi traditions and culture.

Venture out into the snowy wilderness with your guide on a snow shoe hike. This is an easy way to enjoy the landscapes and explore the forests surrounding the lodge. The tour begins with instruction on how to attach the snow shoes to your boots and walk through deep snow. You'll set off for a wilderness camp which is located on a mountain ridge where your guide will make a fire. From here you'll enjoy a great view of the Alta valley, the surrounding mountains and the frozen river below. You'll share a hot drink next to the warming glow of the fire and listen to stories from your guide. Along the way you'll look out for signs of local wildlife while learning about the flora and fauna of the area. The maximum group size is 10 guests on this walk.

Return to the Lodge for lunch, then choose between relaxing by the fire or renting snowshoes for another self-guided adventure. Your final evening includes a three-course dinner at the Maka restaurant, with free time afterwards to step outside and watch for the elusive Northern Lights over Alta.

Experience the Arctic light and nature while driving your own snowmobile from Sorrisniva through the Alta Valley and up to the Finnmark plateau. The sun and the Arctic light vary during the winter season. Around noon the arctic light is brightest and can provide a wonderful light on the horizon. This special light can be seen in a better way once you go up on the Finnmark plateau with its wide, white snow-covered expanse. Your journey starts with full instructions from your guide on how to drive the snowmobile, before heading off into the surrounding scenery. You'll share the snowmobile, swapping places during the trail, unless a solo snowmobile is booked.
