Begin your adventure by strolling through the downtown area, where you'll find an array of cozy cafés, delightful restaurants, unique shops, and charming art galleries. The town is also home to several intriguing museums, including the folk museum, Nonni house, Industry museum, motorbike museum, and aviation museum. Don’t miss the iconic Akureyri church and a leisurely walk through the old part of town to admire its historical buildings.
In the evening, prepare for an enchanting experience as you embark on a Northern Lights tour. Starting at 9:00 PM, you'll be picked up from your hotel and join a small group of no more than 15 passengers. This intimate tour offers ample time to marvel at the spectacular display of colours, lights, and textures of the Northern Lights. As you venture into the dark, frozen winter night, you'll witness a breath-taking natural phenomenon that feels like stepping into a magical fairy-tale. You will have the morning at leisure to explore Akureyri and then at 13:00, you will kick off your next adventure with the Classic Whale Watching Tour, which runs for 3 hours. This is your chance to see some amazing marine life, including the huge Humpback whales and lively dolphins that hang out in the fjord.
In the early evening after the tour a taxi will pick you up from your accommodation and take you to the Forest Lagoon. The Forest Lagoon is a cool new geothermal spa set in Vaðlaskógur Forest, just a short drive from Akureyri. The pools are heated with natural geothermal water from the nearby Vaðlaheiði mountain, discovered during a tunnel project. Whilst you are there you might even catch the Northern Lights! There will be no rush—stay as long as you like, and the staff at the lagoon can call a taxi for you whenever you’re ready to head back.
