ITINERARY

The journey to Highland Base is truly part of the adventure as you head inland to Kerlingarfjöll. Summer, from June to August, transforms Kerlingarfjöll into a landscape of vibrant contrasts. Average temperatures hover around 10 to 15 degrees Celsius, with icy streams melting into flowing rivers across the lush green valleys. Vegetation reappears under the melted snow, showcasing a variety of colors. However, be prepared for sudden drops in temperatures and occasional snow showers.

From Reykjavík, the trip takes approximately 3.5 hours, covering nearly 200 kilometers—a voyage moving from paved highways to the challenging and desolate gravel roads of the country’s interior. You'll eventually arrive to the remote outpost, home to Highland Base - a collection of architecturally stunning wooden hotels and A Frame cabins dotted on the landscape.

Settle into your accommodation and acclimatize to Iceland's true rugged wilderness. Highland Base’s 80-seat restaurant combines hearty cooking and culinary excellence. It offers bistro comfort food during the day and buffet dining by night in the summer months, and you may dine at your own leisure (payable locally). The lounge, located above the restaurant, is a place of cozy warmth and communal togetherness with captivating views of Kerlingarfjöll. You also have access to the hotel's geothermal spa. Three interconnected hot pots form Highland Base Baths. Sourced from the geothermal bounty of the Hveradalir hot springs, these pools of natural warmth bring forth deep relaxation under the arctic sky.

Wake up and enjoy the pure mountain beauty of Highland Base. Despite the harsh conditions, Kerlingarfjöll hosts an array of wildlife and vegetation that have adapted to the environment.

Among the resident wildlife are the Arctic Fox and the Ptarmigan, a bird whose plumage changes from speckled brown in the summer to pure white in the winter for perfect snow camouflage. The landscape also serves as a habitat for migrant birds each summer.

Despite the rugged atmosphere, plant life thrives uniquely. Moss and lichen colonies cling to rocks, adding a splash of green to the landscape. Dwarf shrubs and sturdy Arctic flowers, such as the Mountain Avens and Moss Campion, provide a startling contrast in color during the brief summer season.

During summer, the terrain is ideal for hiking and photography. Trails take you through colorful mountains, hot springs, and geothermal zones. A popular hike is through the Hveradalir geothermal area with its captivating steaming vents and bubbling hot springs.
