Today, you’ll explore Iceland’s famous Golden Circle, a route showcasing some of the country’s most impressive natural and historical sights.
Your first stop is the Geysir geothermal area, where Strokkur geyser erupts every few minutes, sending boiling water up to 35 metres into the air. This site is named after the original Geysir, the namesake of all geysers worldwide, and is surrounded by steaming vents and bubbling hot springs.
Next, visit Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most powerful waterfalls. Fed by meltwater from the Langjökull glacier, the falls plunge into a deep canyon, creating a dramatic scene. On sunny days, you may even spot a rainbow forming in the mist, making it a perfect photo opportunity.
End the day at Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where history and geology collide. Walk between the shifting North American and Eurasian tectonic plates and take in views of Iceland’s largest natural lake. This is also the site of Iceland’s first parliament, established in 930 AD, making it a key landmark in the country’s history.
Today, you’ll explore Iceland’s second most famous route—the South Coast, a region packed with waterfalls, black sand beaches, and glaciers.
Begin your journey at Seljalandsfoss, a stunning waterfall where you can take a short walk behind the cascading water. Be sure to bring a raincoat, as the mist can be heavy, but the experience of standing behind the falls is well worth it. This unique perspective makes for an incredible photo opportunity.
Next, visit Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. Here, the Skógá River plunges 60 metres into a dramatic gorge. If you’re up for it, climb the staircase alongside the falls for a breathtaking view from above, where you can see the surrounding landscapes stretching into the distance.
The highlight of the day is an ice cave tour on Vatnajökull Glacier. Equipped with the right gear, you’ll venture onto the glacier with an expert guide to explore its stunning blue ice caves. As you walk through this frozen wonderland, your guide will share insights into the ever-changing glacial formations, making this an unforgettable experience.
Start your day at Jökulsárlón, a breathtaking glacier lagoon fed by the melting Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Icebergs of all shapes and sizes drift across the crystal-clear water, creating a dramatic landscape framed by black sand beaches and towering mountains. This ever-changing scene is a paradise for photographers and nature lovers alike.
Just across the road, visit Diamond Beach, where icebergs from the lagoon wash ashore. The contrast between the gleaming ice blocks—ranging from pure white to deep blue—and the dark volcanic sand makes for a truly striking sight. As the ice glistens in the sunlight, it’s easy to see how this beach earned its name.
Next, explore Reynisfjara, Iceland’s most famous black sand beach. Here, powerful Atlantic waves crash against towering basalt columns, creating a wild and dramatic coastal scene. In the distance, you may catch a glimpse of Dýrhólaey’s cliffs, a well-known landmark along the South Coast.
Finally, return to Reykjavík, with an expected arrival around 8 PM. Depending on weather and road conditions, travel times may vary, but the journey back offers a chance to reflect on the incredible landscapes you’ve explored.
