Whale watching holiday in the Lofoten Islands

The Lofoten Islands in North Norway are within touching distance of the edge of the continental shelf which plunges the depth of the ocean to more than 3000 feet. Here the deep water and resulting supply of nutrient-rich food such as squid and fish are essential feeding grounds for Sperm whales. Located just an hour from the coast of the Lofoten Islands, this trip is a perfect location for watching the Sperm whales in their natural environment. This holiday itinerary can be adapted to suit you and is available between May and September. All our trips support the research and protection of the whale colonies and take place on board small vessels which use technology to reduce any disturbance caused to the whales.

DAY 1:

Arrive in the Lofoten Islands and settle in to your traditional fisherman's cabin (Rorbu) overlooking the wild Atlantic Coast. We'll provide you with recommendations on where to eat out in Svolvaer to help you make the most of your holiday.

DAY 2:

After breakfast, enjoy the day at your own pace with our recommendations for activities and sights to visit. We can arrange cycling, walking, and kayaking trips with one of Svolvær’s local guides. Lofoten offers ideal leisurely cycling terrain - its highest point is just 130 metres above sea level. We’ll organise routes and cycle hire for you to enjoy the islands on two wheels. Otherwise, enjoy a guided or independent walk in the nearby mountains at midnight when the sun is still shining over the islands in the summer months.

DAY 3:

Today you'll make your own way to your scheduled bus after lunch. You’ll enjoy a scenic bus journey northwards to Andenes located on the northern tip of the Vesteralan Islands. Please note that the bus fare is not included but a timetable will be provided. We can also arrange car hire for you if preferred. Arrive in Andenes in the early evening and check into your hotel.

DAY 4:

From May until September, travel out with a group to view the impressive great sperm whales which frequent the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. Your guide will take you to see the whales without disturbing their peace. You’ll also have the chance to view local seabird colonies and sea eagles.

DAY 5:

Today you'll transfer to the airport to connect to your returning flights. We'll advise you on the best connections for your travel dates and destination. Alternatively you can extend your holiday in the Lofoten Islands with extra nights, activities or perhaps hop on board the Hurtigruten Coastal Express to other destinations in Norway such as Senja, Tromso, Kirkenes or Bergen. We'll be happy to talk through the detail and options with you.

In the winter months we can arrange a swimming with killer whales (Orca) snorkelling trip.

Whale watching holiday in the Lofoten Islands

Our short stop off in Oslo gave us chance to hop on a boat for the quick but scenic ride to the fabulous Fram museum which set us up well for the rest of our trip. The drive from Harstad airport to Andenes was blissfully traffic free, easy to navigate and with a stunning mix of mirror-like water, mountains, covered densely with trees and bright moss. Take binoculars - our sightings included a dolphin, a moose and a pair of white-tailed eagles. Our whale-watching trip with Whale Safari was a highlight - even when a comfy 10 degrees and dry on land a trip to sea means a generous number of layers plus waterproof trousers, top and gloves in order to be comfy. Bleik beach, complete with sheep on the day that we visited was lovely and a couple of rainy hours was spent at the very interesting and fun Aurora Space museum nearby.
