Fly Drive Holiday

Short Break Self Drive Holiday in the Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands are often represented by just a tiny pinprick on world maps located between Iceland and Scotland. Surrounded by the wild Atlantic Ocean, the Faroe Islands remain one of the few undiscovered destinations of the world. Despite this, it is only a two hour flight from Edinburgh or Copenhagen. This short break self drive holiday covers many of the highlights of the Faroe Islands, from bird cliffs to picturesque villages to its cultural capital. You’ll uncover a unique island lifestyle – rugged, human and able to adapt to the elements.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

DAY 1:

Arrival in the Faroe Islands. Fly from Edinburgh, Copenhagen or Reykjavik.

Your rental car will be ready for you on arrival along with a map and warm Faroese welcome. Our representative will be able to answer any questions you may have before wishing you a Góða ferð (bon voyage in Faroese). The other locals you’ll meet on exiting the airport car park are the local sheep population which gives the Faroe Islands its name – “islands of the sheep”. Much like islanders, the sheep are hardy to the elements and are adept at climbing the steep mountainsides where a carpet of lush green grass keeps them fed year round.

Your eyes will need to be trained to deal with the awesome sights that you pass as you drive. Luckily traffic is calm on the islands so you’ll never feel hurried as you set off north to the village of Gjógv. There are no less than six dialects across the 18 islands which means that depending on who you are speaking to, Gjógv is pronounced in many different ways (try ‘G-JEGV’ – the local pronunciation).

En route to Gjógv, we’ll recommend picturesque detours – for example to the village Saksan where you’ll find the characteristic grass roofed houses surrounding by steep mountains and a lagoon-like lake. If the tide is out, there is a short walk along the sandy beach where you can breath in the fresh Atlantic air. You’ll also pass the mountain Slættaratindur standing at 882 meters – the highest peak on the Faroe Islands. Try to spot the rock formations, the ‘Giant and the old Hag’ at Eiði.

You’ll stay overnight at Guesthouse Gjáargarður in Gjógv with the chance to explore this charming village situated next to a deep gorge. Dinner is available at the guest house (not included).

DAY 2:

Breakfast at the guest house, check out and get ready to explore the northern Islands. On the way you’ll drive through Norðoyatunnilin – the Northern Isles sub-sea tunnel which provides a memorable experience with its light installation by a local artist. Emerging above ground on the island of Borðoy, you’ll find a landscape dominated by high mountains that fall dramatically and sharply into the sea – areas of land known as promontories.

You’ll arrive to the northern most village of Viðareiði, where - if you are fit - you can climb the mountain north of the village to the top of the world’s highest promontory. On the top you will be rewarded with views over the northern outlying islands. Enjoy a walk to Kunoy before continuing by car to Klaksvik to see the beautiful church of Christianskirken.

Your afternoon ends with a drive to the capital city of Tórshavn where you will check into your centrally located three star hotel (Hotel Streym or Guesthouse Bládýpið). Enjoy some Faroe ‘city life’ with our recommendations for dining.

DAY 3:

Breakfast at the hotel followed by a day to explore Tórshavn. We will make recommendations to help you make the most of your stay. A visit to the old town Tinganes is a must as well as a shopping trip to see the local handicrafts and knitwear. We also recommend visiting Kirkjubøur, a 20 minute drive where you’ll find the oldest church of the Faroe Islands and the 900 year old turfed roof house, Roykstovan. Here you can see the ruins of St. Magnus Cathedral, which is regarded as one of the largest cultural attractions in the Faroe Islands. We can also arrange walking tours, boat trips, fishing and horseback riding – to name a few of the local activities.

Overnight in Tórshavn.

DAY 4:

Breakfast at the hotel and check out early.

Drive to Vestmanna for an unforgettable boat tour to the famous bird cliffs, the Vestmannabjørgini. As the boat sails along the coast weaving in and out of caves, you’ll have the chance to view the local seabirds such as puffins, guillemots, fulmars and kittiwakes.

In the afternoon, drive to Vágar after visiting further local sights with awe-inspiring nature where the sea and mountains are in constant view. The village of Bøur provides both a stunning view point and some fantastic saga stories.

In the evening check in at Vagar Hotel, close to the airport. The hotel has a 9-hole golf course and the reception staff will be pleased to recommend local walks before dinner is served in the hotel restaurant (not included).

DAY 5:

Breakfast at the hotel and time to bid farewell to the unforgettable Faroe Islands. Transfer to the airport where you will connect to your onward flight.

This programme is flexible and can be customized to your requirements. We can recommend a programme to suit your preferred travel dates and itinerary. We can also arrange transfers for you and guided tours if you would prefer to have a semi-escorted trip to the Faroe Islands. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us and our Faroe Islands specialist will be pleased to advise you.

Short Break Self Drive Holiday in the Faroe Islands

4/5

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the Faroe Islands. The weather was quite mild - had rain 1 day but it did not stop us doing anything. We loved Gjogv the best of all. Such a beautiful little town and such a unique natural harbour. Whilst our accommodation was satisfactory, we were a little disappointed in the "hostel"-type accommodation. Having been told that they were 3 star we expected something smarter and more upmarket. The breakfasts were good and the Hotel in Torshavn offered free tea/coffee making facilities all day which was nice and they even had biscuits on offer. However the TV in this room was attached to a side wall so we were unable to watch from the comfort of the beds. The car hire was 100%. We expected a little car and were surprised to receive a Nissan Juke which we were a bit concerned about as it was our first time driving a left-hand drive vehicle. However, it was fine. There is not much traffic to worry about.I think we traveled all the roads on the islands that we visited and found some wonderful spots. All in all it was a great trip and everything worked as it should have. Thank you!

The trip was well organized overall after an initial complication with hotel check-in. I would still recommend the agency to others traveling in the Faroes. It would have been nice to have more detailed information/suggestions on sites and other activities.
