Ice floes

Short break in Ilulissat and Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Locked in an eternal winter, Greenland’s ice cap is a sight that lives with you - whether you witness its icebergs at the Ilulissat Icefjord or step on to the ice cap at Kangerlussuaq. This holiday offers the chance to do both. With almost as many sled dogs as people, Ilulissat is the third largest city in Greenland. Its position next to the UNESCO heritage site of Icefjord makes it a truly unique destination. Enjoy a close up view of the fjord with its drifting icebergs before continuing your holiday to the more southerly settlement of Kangerlussuaq. Here wildlife is often in abundance including wild musk oxen and reindeer who roam the edge of the inland ice cap. The trip can be customized to your choice of Greenland adventures.

DAY 1:

Flight from Reykjavik to Ilulissat. If the weather is clear, you’ll have a fantastic bird’s eye view of the vast ice cap below as you approach the west coast of Greenland. You’ll be welcomed in the arrivals hall by our local hosts who will transfer you to your accommodation. You’ll be staying at the four star Arctic Hotel which sits at the edge of the UNESCO Icefjord. After time to settle in and absorb the awe-inspiring views, you’ll be led on a city walking tour. You’ll visit the old part of town and see buildings from the start of the Danish trading station, the busy fishing harbour, the old church and the museum (entry included).

Overnight at Hotel Arctic and welcome dinner included.

DAY 2:

After breakfast choose from our range of optional excursions which include:

Guided Hike to Sermermuit - Enjoy a three hour walk along the Icefjord to Sermermuit where traces of ancient Inuit cultures can be seen.

Boat tour to the Hunters Settlement - A six hour day trip by boat to the tiny settlement of Oqaitsut/Rodebay with a population of just 40 people, who rely on hunting and fishing.

Midnight Cruise to the Icefjord - Witness the warm colours of the midnight sun combined with the cool colours of the icebergs of the Icefjord on a cruise at midnight.

Ice Fishing tour - Your guide will check local ice conditions and you’ll sail to the best spot for fishing either near to Bredebugt or the mouth of the Icefjord. You may catch cod, halibut, redfish, or catfish.

Visit a Greenlandic husky farm - Husky dogs in Greenland are working animals with their own distinct characteristics. On this tour you’ll visit the dogs and help out at feeding time learning about life with huskies.

Whale Safari - Cruise by boat into Disko Bay to spot whales. In the summer time humpback whales come to Disko Bay to feed on capelin, a small herring-like fish. As the humpback whales are a protected species they are very trusting and can often be enjoyed at close range.

Illulissat Evening Kayaking - Paddle in a kayak and witness the overwhelming beauty of icebergs calving from the Ilulissat Icefjord under the light of the midnight sun.

DAY 3:

Breakfast at the hotel. Day at leisure in Ilulissat for optional excursions.

DAY 4:

Enjoy breakfast at your accommodation and a farewell coffee with your guides before you transfer to the airport. After arrival to Kangerlussuaq our local hosts will walk you to your accommodation. You will join a guided city walk and have the option to join an adventure which include: Guided hiking tour to Sugar Loaf Mountain (4-5 hours) - This is an active hike to a mountain summit where you’ll enjoy fabulous views to the inland Ice Cap. Lunch is included.

Wildlife Tour (1.5 hours) - Join a short nature safari by mini-bus to search for local populations of musk oxen and reindeer roaming near to Kangerlussuaq.

Helicopter tour (25 mins / 45 mins) - Enjoy a spectacular aerial view of the Ice Cap and wildlife on a helicopter tour. The tours fly at low altitude to give a close-up view of the scenery and musk oxen.
