WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

DAY 1:

Arrival to Karasjok and transfer to Engholm Husky Lodge where you’ll settle into your design cabin and enjoy dinner at the lodge. Your husky musher guide will give you a thorough briefing during the evening for the next day’s dog-sledding tour.

Staying at: Engholm Husky Design Lodge

DAY 2:

After breakfast, your day begins fitting out your gear including snow suits and boots to ensure that you stay warm throughout the trip. The husky teams will be organised and you’ll be introduced by name to your team of eager dogs. You’ll learn how to care for the dogs as well as lead them on the sleds.

The two night expedition begins directly from the lodge continuing over a hilly stretch over frozen lakes and marshes. You’ll learn how to control the sled and steer your team. The language of the musher is one which you’ll become familiar with during the next few days. You’ll eventually reach a basecamp where you’ll spend the night in a warm tent in the wilderness. Alternatively the route may follow the Finnmarks Plateau where you will lodge in basic wilderness cabins. Your first job on arrival to basecamp will be to ensure the dogs are well and looked after including a good feed. At night you will have a good chance of seeing the beautiful Northern Lights.

DAY 3:

A wilderness breakfast starts your day off on the right track. The huskies will be eager to get going. So you’ll soon be harnessing up your team ready for another full day of husky sledding. You will now be growing in confidence as you tackle varied terrain and get to know the individual characters of the dogs. Throughout the trip, your guide will introduce you to the Arctic nature and wildlife looking out for animal tracks and crossing winter pasture for reindeer. You may also see moose wandering in the forests. Eventually you’ll arrive at the basecamp where you will spend the night.

DAY 4:

Today your husky sledding expedition returns on a different route through the stunning and silent wilderness back to Engholm Husky Lodge. By now, your dogs will be enjoying your leadership and you’ll have built up a great relationship with them. Your route follows some of the terrain of the world famous dog-sledding race, the Finnmarkslopet, so you will have had a true and authentic insight into life as a dog musher. Your dogs are not tourist dogs but dogs that are also used to racing long distances which creates a special kind of experience that only a privileged few get to do.

A home cooked evening meal awaits you at the lodge as well as a cosy wood heated sauna and outdoor hot tub – a perfect place to spend your final evening. If you are lucky you may see the dance of the Aurora in the night sky.

DAY 5:

Breakfast and departure. If you wish you can extend your stay at the lodge or continue to another destination in Northern Norway such as Alta, Tromso or Kirkenes. We can tailor your trip to suit your requirements.

Northern Lights and Dog Sledding Holiday

5/5

At the beginning we felt that that we were travelling a long distance, taking a lot of flights, to reach a remote destination. However, when we arrived at the Engholm Lodge in Karasjok we were not disappointed. Other participants, in our husky adventure, were coming from further afield (Australia, America, Georgia, etc) and had to take as many flights to get there. The cabin we were in staying and the mushing experience were fantastic. The facilities and expeditions were excellent - well planned and well managed. Sven Engholm and Christel were always very kind and very hospitable to us. Overall it was a brilliant experience that I would like to repeat again. Thank you for Magnetic North to find this holiday for us.
