This is a place rich in stories both from the East and the West with a backdrop of forests, frozen rivers and the Northern Lights. This holiday indulges those looking for a genuine wilderness experience and incredible dog-sledding both by day and night. You'll be hosted by Trine on her husky farm where you'll get to know her beloved husky dogs and stay in cosy guesthouse accommodation. This holiday can be combined with a stay in Kirkenes and the Snow Hotel.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

DAY 1:

Arrive in Kirkenes and transfer to your accommodation at Birk Husky Farm in the borderland between Norway and Russia. Settle into your room in the cosy guesthouse and say hello to the pack of husky dogs who live on the nearby farm.

In the evening try and catch your first glimpses of the Northern Lights in the dark skies.

DAY 2:

Today you'll join a full day dog-sledding adventure. You'll travel in a small group of up to 8 participants and will have a chance to drive the sled to the snowy forests of Pasvikdalen. Enjoy the silence as the dogs take you over wild landscapes. This tour includes a stop for lunch and hot drinks. Your guide will tell you about the local Arctic wildlife which includes the elusive brown bear.

For a true taste of a dog-musher’s life, we can also recommend the overnight wilderness tour which is available during set dates. During this overnight tour you will receive all the knowledge you need from your guides to take care of your own team of sled dogs. During the first day you will cover a distance of up to 15 km staying in a cosy wilderness cabin with no electricity. In the evening, you will have a chance to try a traditional sauna. During your stay you will enjoy local food such as fish from the river, king crab or reindeer meat. Please get in touch to find out how to include this in your itinerary (supplement required).

DAY 3:

You’ll have the day either at your own pace or perhaps try another excursion in the wilderness including snow mobiling or participate in the dog day spa. Once a week the dogs are given a day off to rest and recuperate. You can help out by changing their hay, manicuring their nails, and offering plenty of cuddles.

DAY 4:

Today you’ll return to the airport or continue your journey in Norway.

Extend your stay with a night in a hotel room made of snow at Kirkenes Snow Hotel. Or perhaps enjoy a voyage along Norway's Arctic coastline on board the Hurtigruten Coastal Express to Tromso and the Lofoten Islands. The Pasvik Valley is famed for its rich wildlife and birdlife. In March and April, look out for exotic visitors to the bird feeders. Recent visitors include the Siberian Jay, the Siberian Tit and the Pine Grosbeak.
