WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

Day 1:

Your Senja adventure begins in the morning, departing from the vibrant city of Tromso. The breathtaking fjord landscapes in the Senja region are some of the finest Norway can offer. Take in the majestic National Tourist Route onroute to Hamn I Senja. This incredible road winds along the northern coast of the island, with idyllic views out to long white sand beaches, steep mountains crashing into the ocean and small dwindling roads. Arrive at the welcoming Hamn I Senja in the late afternoon.

Settle into your new surroundings before visiting restaurant Storbrygga Spiseri for your included evening meal. The harbour view restaurant offers a seasonal menu all year round, specialising in traditional fish, shellfish and Norwegian ingredients sourced from local suppliers.

Over the next two nights you are treated to a visit to the nearby cosy lighthouse. The interior of the lighthouse has 360 degree views over the fjord, perfect for catching a glimpse of the astonishing aurora borealis. When the sky is clear in Hamn, the Aurora can be seen stretching over the mountains and the fjord and all the way out to the horizon

Day 2:

From the end of December to the beginning of February, the ocean outside Senja is filled with herring. The influx of herring invades the fjords of Senja, bringing with them the mighty humpback whales and orcas. Northern Norway’s whale season is unique, being the only place in the world where humpback whales and orcas are known to dine side by side. This morning you have the amazing opportunity to be part of this unique and fascinating experience. Meet the magnificent animals face-to-face as they swim and feed around your boat. Join a knowledgeable marine biologist guide on board, who can answer any questions you might have about the beautiful creatures.

Outside of the whale season the morning will again be enjoyed on the waters in nearby nearby Bergsfjorden observing a wealth of amazing arctic wildlife. Just North of Hamn, Bergsfjorden offers up scenic contrasts of shapes and colours that constantly shift with the changing weather. Steep majestic mountains dive straight into the sea, and pearly white beaches of crushed sea shells line the islands in the clear turquoise waters. Get up close to classic arctic wildlife, including seals, eagles and sea birds.

Relax in this peaceful setting this afternoon. Choose to relax in your room, warm up with a drink in the cognac saloon or spend time in the hot tub and sauna that are available for hire.

Day 3:

Following breakfast it is time to bid farewell to Senja. A short return journey follows, arriving into Tromsø in the evening. Choose to extend your stay in Senja to take advantage of the wide range of activities on offer. Get in touch with the Magnetic North Travel team to tailor your perfect Senja vacation.

Tonight will be spent in the city of Tromso, a lively city with a cultural offer and a city deeply connected to its surrounding wilderness areas from the inland Lyngen Alps to the outlying coastal islands. Choose to dine out at one of the many exceptional restaurants, explore the wilderness in search of the elusive northern lights or relax in the comfort of your hotel.

Day 4:

Your trip to the Magnetic North draws to an end today. Get in touch with the team to extend your arctic holiday or arrange onward travel.

Northern lights photo tour
The spectacular Aurora is a moving natural wonder that is best viewed in certain locations and under favourable circumstances. Travel across the island by car in search of the best spots to photograph the auroras with the amazing Senja nature in the background. Guidance and tripods are made available by your guide to help you capture amazing photos of the ephemeral lights.

Snowshoe hikes
A range of snowshoe excursions are on offers from Hamn I Senja. Choose from a short 4 hour hike through pristine snow or a long trek last up to 7 hours. Depending on snow conditions the excursion will either run straight from the resort or involve a short transfer. This trip allows you to enjoy beautiful mountain views, glistening snow and a full day out in the wilderness.

Body rafting
Ride the tidal currents of a nearby inlet in an insulated comfort of a survival suit. This excursion is suitable for all and is both thrilling and relaxing. The pure joy of surfing along with the remarkable scenery floating by, all the while being kept safe, buoyant and warm by the suit, makes for an experience of a lifetime.

Hot tub and Sauna
The resort boasts a highly unique hot tub: an upside down genuine fishing vessel. Instead of launching it on the water, the boat was refitted as hot tub for up to fifteen people.

Winter Wildlife, and Aurora Watching in Senja

5/5

I wanted to let you know that we had a magnificent time in Senja last week. We had the best time and really enjoyed each of our planned trips especially the Dog Sledding which we both really enjoyed!!! Hamn I Senja was a great location and very smart accommodation block.  The food was fantastic even though there was no choice with the menu. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful and it's defnitely a place we would like to revisit - perhaps in the Summer/Autumn to expereince a different season and activities. Thanks again for all your help Matt.
