Arctic City stay and Aurora Cabin Resort

Tromsø and Luxury Cabin Aurora Resort

The city of Tromsø, also known as the “gateway to the Arctic” offers a wonderful opportunity to take part in thrilling winter activities such as dog-sledding and snowmobiling, and is a great base to embark on several excursions in search of the magical northern lights. Enjoy the wonderful arctic atmosphere and small town charm with many restaurants, bars and shops to explore at your leisure.

Combine a stay in Tromsø with the new and exciting ÆRA, the northern lights resort situated north of the city, just a short transfer away. The concept at the resort is to relax, unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of its coastal location, nestled by the picturesque fjord with a backdrop of mountains in the distance and away from city lights, making it the perfect location for experiencing the aurora.

Our holidays in Tromsø are tailored around your preferred departure dates and choice of activities and accommodation. At ÆRA you’ll stay in an amazing Aurora Glass Cabin or Panoramic Glass Lodge with views to the fjord and beyond, perfect for viewing the dancing lights from the comfort of your own accommodation.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

Day 1:

On arrival at Tromsø airport make your way to the city centre hotel. There is a choice between the regular shuttle bus service, taking approximately 10-15 minutes and costing about £10 per person each way. The bus stops at four locations in Tromso and tickets can be purchased on board. Alternatively, take a taxi for the short journey directly to your hotel, or we can book a private transfer where you will be met on arrival and escorted to the city hotel.

In the evening enjoy exploring the city with our recommendations for places to visit and eat. And later try to catch your first glimpses of the Northern Lights in the dark skies.

Staying at: Thon Hotel Tromso

Day 2:

Tromsø is a delightful small city to explore by foot. Visit the Arctic Cathedral and the many museums like the Polar Museum, Arctic University Museum of Norway, The Science centre, Troll Museum and the Northern Norway Art Museum. Take the cable car to Fjellheisen for amazing views over the city, taste the local beer at Mack brewery and watch the seals feeding at Polaria. There is plenty to keep you busy by day.

And by night, there are several optional excursions taking you away from the city lights in search of the dancing aurora.

Day 3:

Leaving Tromsø behind, take a pre-bookable taxi transfer for the 30 minute journey along the fjord to ÆRA resort. On arrival you’ll receive a warm welcome from the staff, who will be your hosts during your entire stay, making sure you have a lasting and memorable experience. Every evening the bonfire is lit where you are invited to storytelling, learning about the northern lights and Norwegian culture in the arctic. Or simply, come by for a chat and hot cup of coffee!

The evening meal is a traditional and rustic stew of meat, fish or a vegetarian option. You can choose to dine in the communal lavvo, a cosy Sami-style tent with a fireplace creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Or if you prefer, enjoy a private dinner experience served directly to your cabin, giving you the opportunity to keep watch for the dancing aurora straight from your own cabin. The resort offers a northern lights alarm, ensuring you don’t miss this natural phenomenon.

Staying at: AERA Northern Lights Resort

Day 4:

The day is free for you to enjoy the magical snowy landscape with the use of snowshoes included in your stay. Take a walk on the trails in the area around the resort, working up an appetite for lunch, an optional addition that can be pre-booked or booked on the spot.

Relax in the afternoon in your cabin accommodation, perhaps warming up in the resort's sauna which can be booked upon arrival for your one-time complimentary use.

In the evening, decide to have your meal in the cabin or lavvo-style dining area, or for something extra special you can upgrade the meal and book the King Crab dinner experience, featuring freshly caught king crabs from the icy waters of the Barents Sea and witness the whole preparation to your dinner plate. We recommend booking this in advance.

Day 5:

Today you’ll leave the resort, if you can tear yourself away! A taxi transfer will take you to the airport in time for the onward flight.

The Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon and so we cannot guarantee you will witness it during your trip. The Northern Lights season begins in September and ends during April. Temperatures, colours, snowfall and hours of darkness vary considerably during this period.
