Greenland Escape

Short Break in Ilulissat

Ilulissat means Iceberg in Greenlandic - and with good reason. Here you will find the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ilulissat Ice Fjord, a vast glacier, and ancient Inuit ruins. With its mix of modern life and traditional Greenlandic living, kayaks and dry fish are placed on racks side by side with the laundry, and thousands of sled dogs add character to the town, providing a unique atmosphere with their howls. This Autumn short break to Ilulissat includes many highlights and gives you the opportunity to view the magical Northern Lights after dark between September to March and the Midnight Sun between June to August.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

Day 1:

Your trip begins in Copenhagen where you'll board a flight to Greenland. We suggest adding a stay in Copenhagen at the start of the trip to explore one of Scandinavia's most popular cities.

Upon arrival, your local guide will meet you in the airport and drive you to Hotel Arctic. After check-in, there'll be a welcome meeting and a guided city walk around Ilulissat. During the walking tour you'll visit the highlights of this compact town including the old part with its colonial buildings, the fishing harbour, the quaint museum and more. There’ll be stops on the way to admire the harbour and the floating icebergs and you’ll pass the famous polar explorer Knud Rasmussen’s birthplace and the old wooden Zion church.

This evening, you'll enjoy a two course dinner at Hotel Arctic before the chance to view the Northern Lights.

Day 2:

After breakfast, it’s time to explore the Ice Fjord in more depth on a leisurely cruise followed by a short hike to Sermermiut in the afternoon.

You’ll sail among the colossal icebergs which have run aground at the mouth of the Ice Fjord, some as high as 70 metres above sea level. Admire the glistening surface of the ice in sunshine, or the contrasting blue shades under cloud. The Arctic light casts new impressions on the ice as you enjoy this sailing tour.

After some free time over lunch, it’s time to head out with your hiking guide to Sermermiut Settlement, just a mile south of Ilulissat. For over 4000 years this area has been home to different Inuit cultures and today you can still witness evidence of their past lives. The UNESCO site can be reached by wooden walkway which winds its way through the landscape following the edge of the fjord in many places. You’ll reach a viewpoint at Nakkaavik (translated Old Women’s Gorge) where you’ll enjoy a hot drink and a chance to enjoy the panoramic views of Disko Bay before returning to Ilulissat. Each season brings a different Arctic perspective: from the snow-covered ground in winter to the colourful wildflowers in summer.

Dinner will be served in the hotel’s restaurant, before another chance to look outside for any signs of the Northern Lights.

Day 3:

Today you’ll enjoy a boat trip to the small settlement of Ilimanaq, where you will have the opportunity to marvel at impressive icebergs and majestic whales, so keep your eyes open!

When you arrive in Ilimanaq, a guide will be there to bring you on a tour of the settlement, where you will hear stories of the Greenlandic culture and history of the area. Listen to great stories of how this small community has developed, the story of the historic buildings, and local life. There is stunning natural beauty in all directions. Lunch will be served in one of the historic houses. Enjoy a hearty meal of Greenlandic specialties in the restored building from the 18th century. The restaurant is located in a beautiful place in a small settlement and is one of the best places to eat in Greenland.

Day 4:

Today it’s time to bid farewell to Greenland where a transfer will take you to the airport in time for your departing flight to Kangerlussuaq and onwards.
