SUGGESTED ITINERARY

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

Day 1:

On arrival at Kiruna airport you will be met and transferred the short distance to Mattarahkka Lodge where you will be greeted by the friendly team and receive warm arctic clothing for the duration of your stay.

After time to settle into your accommodation you will embark on your evening adventure. First, enjoy a 2-course dinner in the traditional tipi tent located outside the lodge. Then you receive driving instructions and safety information on how to drive a snowmobile before heading off to the top of Mount Ednavaara, offering great views over the mountain range and the ideal place to keep watch for the magical aurora.

Staying at: Mattarahkka Lodge

Day 2:

After breakfast, transfer the short distance to a local kennel for a dog-sledding experience. Riding with a guide, sitting comfortably on the sled with reindeer skins keeping you warm, head out through the sparkling frozen winter wonderland with old pine tree forest, frozen lakes and swamps. Along the route you’ll take a break for a traditional Swedish fika and hot drinks by the campfire before heading back to the camp.

Not far from the dog kennel is the magical ICEHOTEL, the very first and best of its kind. You’ll have time to visit this ice creation and marvel at the different sculptures and pieces of art. Afterwards, head back to the lodge and warm up in the outdoor jacuzzi, you’ll have a private 90 minute session, followed by a delicious 3-course dinner.

Each evening from 17.00 the sauna is ready for all guests to use as much or as little as they like during their stay. It’s a very ‘Scandinavian’ thing to do and a wonderful way to relax and feel energised.

Day 3:

Today you jump back on the snowmobiles on a 4 hour safari, taking you to specific places along snowy trails heading to the edge of the Arctic tundra where you have amazing views of Sweden’s most famous mountain range. Experience the stunning scenery, wildlife, local Sami culture and some of the area's hidden gems. The unique light and colours of the Arctic will add to the magic of this adventure. After the tour, you’ll be served lunch back at the lodge.

Day 3 continued:

The afternoon is free for you to relax - perhaps read a book by the fire and enjoy some hot drinks, or if you prefer to be outside in the arctic nature there are snowshoes and nordic skis which guests can freely use.

The evening begins around the campfire in the tipi tent, where you’ll be treated to a delicious BBQ meal. Afterwards you’ll be taken on an Aurora chase in a comfortable minivan, driving you to the best viewing points to experience the northern lights. If the aurora is visible from the lodge, you may prefer to stay there, rather than heading out on the chase.

Day 4:

Say goodbye to your hosts and transfer back to Kiruna airport for your onward travel or extend your stay in Swedish Lapland.

Extend your stay:

This 3 night package is also available as a 4 night option, with an upgraded 5 hour dog-sledding experience mushing your own team of huskies, as well as visiting a reindeer farm and learning about Sami culture and life as a reindeer herder with lunch included.

Situated 20 minutes away from the Lodge is the magical ICEHOTEL, created each year from the frozen River Torne. You can experience sleeping on ice and stay here either at the beginning or end of your holiday at Mattarahkka Lodge.

Departure dates:

The 3 and 4 night package has set arrival dates throughout the season, running approximately every 3-4 days. Please ask our Sales team for the applicable dates.
