Northern Norway holds many charms, none more so than Tromso “the gateway to the north”. Spend time enjoying some of the city's attractions before heading to the beautiful Lyngen Alps where the northern lights dazzle across the sky, giant whales leap from the slate grey waters and husky dogs bark with enthusiasm as they run through the crisp terrain, all with you along for the ride.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

Day 1

On arrival at Tromsø airport make your way to the city centre hotel. There is a regular shuttle bus service, taking approximately 10-15 minutes. Alternatively, take a taxi for the short journey directly to your hotel. The day and evening is free to enjoy the city attractions, including one of the many excellent restaurants for dining.

Staying at: Clarion Hotel the Edge

Day 2

Tromsø is a delightful small city to explore by foot. Visit the Arctic Cathedral and the many museums like the Polar Museum, Arctic University Museum of Norway, The Science centre, Troll Museum and the Northern Norway Art Museum. Take the cable car to Fjellheisen for amazing views over the city, taste the local beer at Mack brewery and watch the seals feeding at Polaria. There is plenty to keep you busy by day. And by night, join one of the optional Northern Lights tours taking you away from the city lights in search of the dancing aurora.

Day 3

After breakfast there is time to head out into the wilderness on an optional excursion, with an opportunity to go dog-sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, feeding the reindeer or a fjord cruise. In the afternoon you will be picked up from your hotel - your Arctic journey continuing with a scenic 2 hour road transfer (including a ferry crossing) through mountain lined valleys and sea hugging coastal roads taking you to Lyngen Experience Lodge, which lies nestled between the ocean and the mountains, enjoying panoramic views of the Ulsfjord. This unique lodge provides the ideal setting for experiencing the Norwegian wilderness and arctic environment. Get settled into the stylish rooms and enjoy an evening meal before venturing outside in search of the Northern Lights. Depending on conditions you will either walk or snowshoe to a remote teepee tent in the woods. Located in a secluded area, it is the ideal place to keep watch for this natural phenomenon. The guide will build a bonfire and, if conditions are right, you may be treated to an amazing display of dancing lights across the night sky.

Day 4

From the beginning of November to the end of January, the giants of the sea appear in the fjords of Northern Norway to feed on the shoals of fish that swim in these waters. Today you will go on the hunt to observe the whales in their natural environment. Your captain will use his knowledge of the area to scan the surface for breaching whales, attempting to get you as close as possible to these magnificent creatures for that winning photograph. The journey passes through an area of spectacular beauty with snow covered peaks and soaring cliffs. Once the whales have moved on for another year, the whale safari will be substituted for a snowmobiling adventure in the Lyngen Alps. Once back at the lodge, you can warm up in the sauna and outdoor jacuzzi, affording magnificent views across the fjord.

Day 5

Start your day off with a hearty breakfast before heading off for a true arctic activity, dog sledding. The trip is quite long so you will need to be in good physical shape to manage the challenging trails. Each person will drive their own sledge with a small team of huskies pulling. Before leaving, you get the chance to meet the eager Alaskan huskies and help harness the dogs before setting off. This is a trip where you experience friendship with the dogs, beautiful scenery and fantastic views in the heart of the Lyngen Alps. During November and December the husky safari will be swapped for a wonderful snowshoe trek through the snow covered forests and peaceful mountains. The afternoon is free to relax and enjoy the snowy scenery from the lodge, unwinding before the well-deserved evening meal. Don’t forget to venture outside in case the aurora makes an appearance.

Day 6

After breakfast, the return transfer departs the lodge at 10.30, giving you another opportunity to enjoy the stunning scenery of the mountains before arriving in Tromsø, either at the airport or city centre.

Please note, the 3 night break at Lyngen Experience Lodge is based on a Monday arrival at the lodge. It is possible to arrange for alternative arrival days, subject to availability and additional charges. To experience more time in the beautiful Lyngen Alps, a 4 night stay is possible with arrival on a Thursday. Please ask one of the sales team for more information.
