After a prompt start to the day, you’ll meet your guide at the hotel at 09.00 am. Departing from Reykjavik, the journey begins as you travel along the Hvalfjorour fjord and pass the town of Borgarnes, before an opportunity for a hike to climb the Grabrok volcano crater. In the afternoon you’ll head north and visit Glaumbaer, encountering one of Iceland’s architectural gems at the turf church which has been extensively restored and now offers a window into the past. You’ll also visit the folk museums. You’ll continue north passing fjords until you reach the town of Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland where you’ll stay overnight.
After breakfast, you have time to explore Akureyri and enjoy the panoramic view over the Eyjafjordur fjord. In the afternoon, your next stop is Godafoss - a wide-angled waterfall that hides stories of Iceland’s saga filled past. After marvelling at Godafoss, Lake Myvatn beckons - a white wonderland in winter and a geological haven for birdlife in summer. See the strange lava formations at Kalfastrond, the pseudo craters at Skutustaoir and the tephra cone Hverfjall. Whatever the season you travel, your final visit of the day will be sure to please at Myvatn Nature Baths. Just like the Blue Lagoon in the south, Myvatn is the lesser visited of the two, and therefore a more quiet and soothing experience as you relax in the warm geothermal waters and enjoy the wonderful views.
After breakfast you’ll head to the lava labyrinth at Dimmuborgir where you’ll learn about the local troll inhabitants who are said to live there. In the afternoon your next stop will be the hot spring area of Namaskard where you’ll witness bubbling mud pools and steaming solfataras. As you continue your journey eastwards through the uninhabited highlands, you may spot an Arctic fox or reindeer which live in this part of Iceland. Between June and August, the tour makes a visit to Dettifoss - Europe’s most powerful waterfall in the northern part of Vatnajokull National Park.
After breakfast, your journey continues through dramatic fjord landscapes and tiny fishing villages, visiting an attractive stone and mineral collection, before arriving at Vatnajokull - Europe’s largest glacier visible from much of the country. A highlight of your tour will be the jaw-dropping sight of Jokulsarlon - a glacial lagoon with floating icebergs that looks spectacular all year round. Between May and September a boat tour is included in the tour. Spend the rest of the day at Europe’s largest national park with mountains and peaks to admire and walk on ‘The Diamond Beach’, where large icebergs get stranded.
Today’s drive will transport you along the southern part of Vatnajokull glacier which has Iceland’s highest mountains, continuing the drive across the Eldhraun lava fields, past black sand beaches and mountainous cliffs, glaciers and waterfalls, and experience the unique Icelandic lava show where you will see and feel the heat from molten lava. You’ll enjoy a stroll on the black lava beach of Reynisfjara near to Vik. In the small village of Skogar you’ll witness the Skogafoss waterfall standing at 60 metres in height. Further west, you’ll stop at Eyjafjallajokull information Center where you’ll learn about the volcano and its infamous eruption. Your final stop of the day will be at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, with a walking trail behind the falls - prepare to get wet!
Start the day at Frioheimar where you’ll learn about the unique qualities of the Icelandic horse and visit a geothermal greenhouse in Fridheimar. The journey continues on the famous Golden Circle route visiting Geysir and the geothermal fields as well as Strokkur, which erupts at 5-10 minute intervals. You’ll continue to Gulfoss, the “golden waterfalls” which tumbles 32 metres into the Hvita River. A visit to Thingvellir National Park completes the circular tour as you return to Reykjavik where you’ll be shown some highlights on a short city tour before your final evening at leisure. Dinner is not included in Reykjavik
