Arctic Wildlife and Summer Adventure in Svalbard

Experience the untouched beauty of the High Arctic on a journey that balances wilderness adventure with refined comfort. This elevated short break combines time in the world’s northernmost town with an exclusive stay at a remote Arctic outpost. Once a lonely radio station, Isfjord Radio is now a boutique hideaway at the very edge of the known world. Here, you’ll find yourself far from routine — immersed in silence, wild landscapes, and close encounters with Arctic wildlife.

With only a handful of guests on each departure, the experience feels deeply personal. Guided hikes, RIB safaris, and shoreline explorations unfold according to nature’s rhythm rather than fixed timetables. Days bring encounters with walruses, seabirds, seals, and possibly polar bears. Evenings mean fine dining, quiet storytelling from your guides, and the warmth of a sauna overlooking the Arctic Ocean.

This is not just a journey to Svalbard — it is a rare chance to disconnect, connect with nature, and carry home stories that linger long after the ice and sea are behind you.

Isfjord Radio Adventure Hotel

Isfjord Radio Adventure Hotel

Isfjord Radio Station was once an isolated outpost for radio operators connecting the people of Svalbard to Norway’s mainland over 1000 km away. Technology has since moved on and it is tourism which breathed new life into the station. The collection of buildings have been tastefully converted into a boutique lodge – a perfect stop-over at the end of a day of outdoor adventure. Arriving by boat or snow mobile, you’ll be welcomed by the lodge’s hosts with a warm drink before time to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Inside the lodge there is a spacious lounge offering a cosy place to enjoy the view from the window looking out for reindeer or polar bears roaming the wild landscapes. A fully stocked bar and snacks will keep you going until dinner time when you’ll gather around the long dining table just like the original residents of the outpost did years ago. Lunch or dinner will be a wonderful insight into local Arctic flavours. There are 23 twin and double rooms at the lodge, but please be aware that bathroom facilities are shared on the corridors of each floor. Please note, that Isfjord Radio is a wilderness hotel and to move outside you will need a guide with you for polar bear protection.

Wake up to sweeping ocean views and the sound of Arctic silence. Today you’ll head out by Polarcircle RIB boat for an expedition into Svalbard’s fjords. Glide past dramatic bird cliffs, witness the calving fronts of mighty glaciers, and drift among sculpted icebergs at Ymerbukta. With luck, you may observe polar bears or Arctic foxes in their natural habitat.

Return to the warmth of the lodge, where time slows. Perhaps take a polar plunge followed by the sauna, or relax with a chilled drink as the sun circles the horizon. Dinner is another celebration of local ingredients, shared in the company of fellow explorers. Afterwards, if the weather allows, you’ll gather under the midnight sun for a bonfire and a toast to the day’s adventures.

Today’s full-day hike immerses you in Svalbard’s wild terrain. Your expert guide will tailor the route to conditions, wildlife presence, and the group’s abilities, creating a true expedition feel. Trek past ancient whale bones, delicate tundra flowers, and sweeping views over mountain ridges. You may even encounter walruses lounging on remote beaches or catch sight of Arctic fox darting among the rocks.

In the afternoon, board the boat for the return journey to Longyearbyen and check-in at Basecamp Hotel for your last night in this arctic outpost.

Day Hike from Isfjord Radio

Day Hike from Isfjord Radio

There is a choice of three routes on this whole day guided hike - learning about the Arctic flora and fauna while marveling at the beautiful landscape that surrounds you in every direction. On one of the routes at Batodden, you may have the opportunity to observe walruses. It is a golden rule that you should never disturb the wildlife on Svalbard, but with so many here at times, it is easy to observe them at a safe distance. On the way you will see whale bones and driftwood that the sea has left, but be careful where you step, the tundra hides treasures such as tiny flowers and well-hidden bird nests. A trip to Linnevannet takes you further up into the mountains - here, the grouse and polar fox can be seen, and the surrounding mountains embrace you in a magical world.

The journey is determined by weather conditions, physical shape of the participants and the guides experience in the Arctic wilderness, considering the best option for the group.
