Wild Swimming Holidays: Benefits of Cold Water Swimming

Dipping into cold water might sound daunting, but it’s widely celebrated for its remarkable health benefits. I have experienced cold water dips around the Suffolk and Cornish Coast and the Lake District once or twice (occasionally on Christmas Day!!) There is nothing quite like the exhilarating feeling plunging into an icy pool of fresh water. Here, I will share my own experiences, health benefits and how you can turn a cold plunge obsession into a Wild Swimming adventure.

Physical Benefits

Cold water swimming is more than a refreshing dip, it’s a full workout for your body and circulatory system. When you immerse yourself in cold water, blood vessels constrict, heart rate increases, and circulation is boosted. Over time, this can improve cardiovascular health and support overall endurance.

Regular exposure to cold water also helps reduce inflammation and soreness, making it popular with athletes for faster recovery. The controlled stress of cold immersion can even strengthen the immune system, helping your body respond more efficiently to everyday challenges.

Many swimmers also report better sleep and increased energy levels after cold water sessions. The combination of physical exertion and cold exposure naturally resets the body, leaving you feeling completely refreshed.

Mental and Emotional Benefits

The mental perks of cold water swimming are just as powerful. Immersing yourself in icy water triggers a rush of endorphins and dopamine, which can boost mood and reduce stress. People often describe a feeling of clarity and calm that lasts long after they’ve left the water.

Studies suggest that regular cold water swimmers experience lower levels of anxiety, improved resilience, and overall improved wellbeing. The challenge of stepping into cold water, combined with the focus on breathing and presence, can also enhance mindfulness and mental toughness.

Cold Water Swimming vs Wild Swimming

There is a difference between cold water swimming (or dipping), and wild swimming. Cold water swimming covers every type of cold water, from your shower, at home plunge pools to dip in the sea. Whereas, the act of wild swimming is only in natural bodies of water like oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams.

Swimming in natural environments connects you with nature in a unique way. The sights, sounds, and movements of lakes, rivers, or coastal waters provide restorative effects that are hard to replicate indoors. Natural waters only amplifying the mental benefits of cold water immersion.

Having dipped my toe occasionally, I would suggest building up your renaissance to it before heading out for a wild swim. It is a bit like running, the more you do and more often, the easier and more comfortable it becomes.

Why a Wild Swimming Holiday Makes Sense

After experiencing the invigorating effects of cold water swimming, it’s easy to see why many people want to take the next step. A wild swimming holiday offers the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, while safely exploring lakes, rivers, and coastal waters under expert guidance.

These holidays are designed to combine the physical and mental perks of cold water swimming with a sense of adventure and discovery. You can enjoy the calming influence of natural settings, meet like-minded enthusiasts, and take part in structured swims that build confidence and resilience.

Whether it’s the rush of a chilly morning dip, the satisfaction of pushing your limits, or simply the joy of being surrounded by nature, a wild swimming holiday transforms the simple act of swimming into a fully immersive wellness experience.

Cold Water Questions:

  • How cold is cold? Cold water is generally considered to be below 15c. The more extreme types might take the plunge at below 5c. The temperature of the water will alter the duration of your dip. Elodie’s Advise: Start with a short dip and gradually increase your time in the water. Cold water swimming is a serious business and not to be taken carelessly. You will build more resilience, the more you do it.
  • What should I bring on a wild swimming holiday? Essentials include a swimsuit or wetsuit, a towel, warm clothing for before and after swims. Don’t forget your sense of adventure and bravery. Optional items might include a swim buoy for visibility or neoprene gloves and socks for extra warmth. Elodie’s Advise: I always wear swim shoes or socks as well as gloves, and most importantly a cosy bobble hat to keep the heat from escaping. To warm up after, a hot water bottle, flask of hot Ribena (something surgery) and a snack! Different venues or clubs may have different rules when it comes to buoyancy aids and swim times, so check these out ahead of time.
  • Is cold water swimming safe? Yes, when done responsibly. Beginners should start gradually, never swim alone, and pay attention to water temperature and personal limits. People with heart or respiratory conditions should consult a doctor before starting. Elodie’s Advise: Everyone is different as well as their personal limits. Don’t take any risks and take a friend with you, for three reasons. 1) To keep you accountable and get you in the water. 2) To be your chief photographer. 3) and most importantly – for safety.

  • What to do when out of the water: After a cold water swim, dry off immediately and change into warm, dry clothing. Sip a hot drink, move gently to restore circulation, and rest until your body has fully warmed up. Elodie’s Advise: I would always take a shower when I have the opportunity, but not immediately after. Let your body rest before jumping into a hot shower. Maybe have the temperature a little lower than you usually would. Showering once safe to do so after a cold dip, is the BEST shower you will ever have!
