What to expect from autumn in Scandinavia

Author: Vanessa

Autumn in Scandinavia is one of the region’s best-kept secrets, (along with the amazing food culture above the Arctic Circle). It’s the time to mindfully experience the changing landscapes. Now that the summer crowds have left, the colourful forests and quiet lakes belong to those who like to venture off the beaten track. The ever-changing colours, the serenity, the slowness of life make this season also known as ‘Ruska’ unique.

Still, these atmospheric autumn days leave no room for boredom. Nature tempts outdoorsy travellers with an abundance of hidden gems and some of them are even edible. Believing that autumn may be a secret that may be a little too well-protected we’re now sharing the best autumn experiences Scandinavia has on offer.

Northern Lights Chasing

Autumn officially kicks off in September, which is when the Aurora season comes to full swing. The skies are now dark enough for the lights to show. You definitely want to bring some warm clothes since the nights begin to get colder. Still, these early autumn temperatures are nothing in comparison to the gear you’ll need during a mid-December Aurora Chase.

In autumn you can join a guided hike to the best viewing spots or simply hop in a minibus. Don’t worry the autumn Aurora is just as strong as the winter one, the only difference is that you have to wait a little longer for dusk to settle.

For a cosy Northern Lights experience, we recommend glass-fronted accommodation  or these autumn cabin breaks.

Outdoor activities

The longer daylight hours, compared to winter, allow travellers to join a variety of daytime activities. Now is the time to hop on a kayak or canoe and paddle down the tree ringed rivers. Autumn might be the time to slow down, but it still has a lot of action up its sleeve. Join a guided hike, river raft, fat biking or mountain biking session.

The best place to go for active autumn adventures is above the Arctic Circle. Explore these tours for an exciting autumn adventure.

Autumn mindfulness

Those who prefer to settle for a calmer more relaxed take on the declining temperatures can roam the forests for mushrooms, blueberries and lingonberries. Join a foraging tour and put a taste on the barren, yet beautiful autumnal landscapes. Since most wilderness hotels feature local ingredients only you may find some of the mushrooms or berries on the menu for the evening.

If you fancy a foodie stay in Finnish Lapland we recommend this wilderness hotel.

Autumn city stays

Autumn puts an additional splash of colour on the already colourful housing fronts of Scandinavia’s charming capitals. Walk or cycle down the cobbled lanes of either Stockholm’s or Helsinki’s in search of the best autumn warmers-aka coffee and cake. After an action-packed day outside, the Nordic sauna ritual is without a doubt the best way to round off an autumn day in the capital.
