It’s the end of the week and it's time for Fredagsmys

It’s not unusual for office workers in Sweden to burst into song on Friday afternoon. The "fredagsmys song" is about going home, curling up on the sofa with a blanket to watch a movie and munch on tasty snacks. It may not sound like something extraordinary on a Friday but it really has become a bit of a phenomenon in recent years. “Mys” is the Swedish translation of the Danish word “hygge”. It’s not surprising that countries in the North want to focus on the warm feelings and quality of cosiness (mys) when nights gets cold and dark in Autumn.

So if you're leaving work on a Friday afternoon and would like the perfect recipe for fredagsmys we have it covered for you here:

  • Grab something comforting to eat, like a pizza or tacos (healthy or unhealthy does not matter for Friday snuggles). And please do not hold back, the more ingredients and sauces the better!
  • Snuggle Wear. Yes it may sound a bit silly but watching a movie in jeans is not acceptable. It is vital that you are as comfy as you can be here. Don't be embarrassed if you have stains from the guacamole or coca cola spilt on your sweatpants, it's just proof you're having a good time! Google the word “Mysbyxa” (snuggle trousers) and you will find the proper uniform for the occasion.
  • Crisps, popcorn, candy, chocolate. Nothing is more exciting than to go into the snack section in the store on a Friday afternoon and pick and choose the tasty treats you will reward yourself with tonight.
  • Don’t forget the movie, no Friday snuggles if you don’t watch a movie while you over-indulge on sweets and popcorn.
  • The finishing details for Friday snuggles is lighting candles and wrapping up in lots of blankets.
