ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Kiruna & Overnight at the ICEHOTEL

Fly to Kiruna in northern Sweden. On arrival you will be met and transferred to Jukkasjarvi, the home of the ICEHOTEL. The first night will be spent sleeping in one of the Art Suites in ICEHOTEL 365 - on arrival you will receive winter clothing and information about how best to sleep on ice using the insulated sleeping bags provided. Your stay for two nights has breakfast included, the evening meal can be taken at either the Icehotel restaurant on site or Homestead restaurant located 10 minutes walk away. Dinner reservations are highly recommended.

Icehotel

The ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjarvi is the world’s first hotel made of ice and snow first appearing on the wintry landscapes of northern Sweden in 1989. Since then, the ICEHOTEL has reappeared in a new guise each year – always pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity and attracting artists and sculptors from all around the globe. The result is an art exhibition of snow, ice and light with imaginative and enchanting themes in each of the unique suites. Guests can stay in an ice room, art suite or deluxe suite – all of which stay a constant temperature just below freezing. Thick winter sleeping bags and warm outer clothing are provided to help guests stay comfortable. There are also warm hotel rooms and Nordic chalets. There are saunas and shared bathroom facilities as well as a choice of three restaurants nearby. The ICEHOTEL restaurant serves Nordic cuisine serving delicacies like reindeer, moose, Arctic char and bramble berries, prepared by Michelin-trained head chef Alexander Meier and his team. The Chef’s Table 12 course tasting menu offers fine dining in a private and personal atmosphere. Meanwhile, the nearby Homestead restaurant offers a more relaxed and informal dining and rustic, homecooked dishes. Inside the restaurant, there’s a cocktail bar and in the ICEHOTEL itself, there’s an ice bar for a chilled drink. For guests staying outside of the winter season, rooms are inside the ICEHOTEL 365 – a year round ICEHOTEL inside a grass-covered roof.

Day 2: Dog Sledding at Mushers

After waking up to a drink of hot lingonberry juice, warm up in the sauna and get ready for breakfast. Enjoy a stroll around the local area before then meeting your guide to head out on a day trip learning to mush with a team of dogs - included in the tour will be a stop for lunch and then upon your return you will be able to check into your warm accommodation at the Ice Hotel.

The evening is all yours to relax, look out for aurora, enjoy dinner at one of the restaurants or if you feeling adventurous you can head out on a northern lights snowmobile tour, a wilderness dinner or even a photography excursions searching for the northern lights.

Dog Sledding Lunch Tour - Driver

A highlight of any trip to the arctic region is joining a dog-sledding tour - and this epic adventure is a must for anyone visiting the ICEHOTEL in Sweden. After receiving safety instructions this hands-on dog sled tour allows you to mush your own team of huskies through the arctic landscape on forest trails and on the frozen river Torne. The snowy plains gives you a feeling of freedom and energy from the eager dogs, willing to run and run, enjoying every moment as much as you! A stop is made at a cozy wilderness cabin where you will be served a hot lunch, before heading back to the ICEHOTEL.

Day 5: Travel to the Treehotel & Unique Tree Room Experience

After breakfast you’ll have time to enjoy the snowy surroundings, perhaps take a walk along the frozen Torne River or there may be time for a morning activity before you join the transfer to Kiruna Station for the early afternoon train to Lulea. The journey takes approximately three and half hours.

On arrival you are met and transferred to the Treehotel, 40 minutes away. You check-in at the guesthouse, where you’ll find the cosy reception and dining area before making your way to the tree room accommodation, located in the forest a few minutes walk away by a gravel path. There are eight individual rooms to choose from, all unique and offering something a little different. Being literally ‘in the trees’ you have a wow feeling and a sense of being somewhere unique and remarkable. The evening meal is served at the guesthouse, with a 3-course meal based on local produce.

Your evening can be spent at the cosy guesthouse, enjoying the privacy of your accommodation or taking part in an optional 2-hour night time safari, taking you to a remote place away from artificial light, learning about the aurora and trying local delicacies around the open fire.

Treehotel

Treehotel is one of the most iconic and recognisable accommodations in Swedish Lapland. Established several years ago by a local family, it is located in the small village of Harads, deep in the Boreal Forest, and offers stunning views over the Lulea River valley. The Treehotel itself comprises of eight unique and different accommodation options for guests, each is separate and perched high in the trees (they differ in height off the ground), and differ in size and facilities.

The Treehotel rooms are part of the small resort, connected to The Guesthouse where you’ll meet your hosts and enjoy your meals in the cosy restaurant, serving home-cooked local cuisine. The Guesthouse has an authentic 1930-1950s theme with a restaurant, bar, sauna and relaxation area and free internet, as well as six guest rooms. When you arrive at Treehotel, you’ll check in at The Guesthouse, where you will leave your main luggage, carrying an overnight bag to your Tree room. All rooms have a unique view on the surrounding forest and valley. The interior of each Tree Room is uniquely designed by the architect, with its own furniture and lighting to complement the individual theme.

Day 6: Transfer to Brandon Lodge & Northern Lights Viewing

After a delicious buffet breakfast, there may be time for a morning activity or sauna, before being transferred to Boden Station and your last train journey, taking 50 minutes, south to the town of Lulea on the Bay of Bothnia. You are met and taken on a guided transfer to Brandon Lodge, approximately 30 minutes away.

The setting is simply stunning - perched on the forest edge overlooking the vast frozen sea, the impressive lodge houses the lounge area with comfortable seating by the open fire and a small bar area. On the first floor is the restaurant where all the meals are served. Scattered by the lodge are 15 wooden cabins offering a very warm and cosy stay for two nights, based on a half-board basis.

In the grounds of the lodge, just by the frozen sea there are two fire pits and also a small log cabin with a log burner where you can light a fire and enjoy the tranquillity of nature, keeping watch at the starry sky above, waiting for the northern lights to appear. There are also some optional evening and northern lights activities which can be booked, including an Aurora Hideaway dinner, Northern Lights nature tour by snowmobile pulled sled, snowshoe walk with dinner, Arctic astronomy tour and Northern Lights snowmobile safari. All of these can be pre-booked, which we recommend to guarantee availability during busy periods.

Brandon Lodge

Brandon Lodge sits majestically on an island surrounded by the frozen Bothnian Bay, just south of the Arctic circle. The main Lodge is on two levels – the ground floor has the reception with an open fire warming the lounge area along with the cozy bar. On the first floor, the welcoming restaurant has enviable views overlooking the frozen expanse from its windows and balcony. In the grounds of the lodge just by the frozen sea edge there is a small log cabin where guests can light the log burner and keep vigil, waiting for the aurora to appear. The skies here are often crystal clear, with so little light pollution, the perfect place for aurora viewing while keeping warm. Surrounding the main lodge on either side are 15 comfortable detached cabins scattered along the forest edge, all with 2 bedrooms, bathroom, sitting area and small kitchenette. The lodge restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and a two or three-course dinner, featuring local produce such as wild game, fish fresh from the sea and berries from the forest.

For something special, it is possible to experience a candle light dinner on the frozen arctic sea. The Aurora Hideaway is a small cabin where your guide cooks you a meal over the outdoor fire. With a roaring fire inside to keep warm and tea lights all around creating a magical romantic atmosphere. Snowshoes are brought on the tour so you can go for a short walk while the meal is being prepared. Don’t forget to keep a watch for the dancing Northern Lights. Explore the Arctic ice and snowy wilderness by snowshoe, snowmobile, dog sled or even Nordic skis which can be hired to use locally. We have chosen four of the popular activities as part of this trip, but these are flexible if you wish to change these for anything else. The main lodge offers a lounge and bar area to relax and share stories by the fire, as well as a separate sauna cabin with outdoor jacuzzi which can be pre-booked for a private experience.

Day 7: Arctic Adventures at Brandon Lodge

Your final full day of the tour gives you a last opportunity to take part in one of the amazing winter excursions you can do in the arctic. At Brandon Lodge there are a great selection of high quality daytime activities, making use of the frozen sea and vast forest area including a Snowmobile Forest Tour, Snowmobile Archipelago Adventure, Dog-sledding short trip, a full-day dog-sledding safari, dog-sledding sled tour, Nordic winter skills, Ice fishing, Cross-country skiing, Sami Reindeer Experience and IceBreaker trip in Pitea. You can also hire snowshoes, nordic skis and fat bikes from the lodge to explore the area at leisure.

After the evening meal head outside, either by the lodge or on one of the excursions for your final chance to witness the magical aurora borealis, the perfect way to end your Swedish Lapland Adventure.

Day 8: Departure from Luleå & Return Home

After breakfast, take the transfer to Lulea airport in time for the flight home.
